Wasn't there a documentary or something explaining that the studios decide that hey we need a Die Hard in the White House movie so they out out an APB and all these writers put out competing scripts?
Same thing happened with the mall cops, Lincoln, Asteroids, etc. Give me some other ones.

I'll excuse that one since it started as a collaboration between Kurt Russell and Kevin Costner that split into competing movies.
The reason for the split is reflected in the differences in the two. Russell's "Tombstone" was an action picture focusing on Earp's life from Tombstone through the end.
Costner's "Wyatt Earp" was a biopic covering Earp's entire life that tried to cover a lot more years in only about 45 more minutes of screentime than "Tombstone".
It isn't like this was a case of one trying to make a "mockbuster" to glom off the publicity of the other film.
