Soon-to-be-retired commissioner David Stern presided over his final NBA draft last night, and as has been the case throughout his career, he was enthusiastically booed each time he appeared on stage.

The boos have been a tradition of Stern's tenure, and he's always greeted them with a bemused smirk. Last night, Stern seemed to get an extra bit of enjoyment out of each boo, knowing that it was his last chance to revel in the fans' hostility. So if you see David Stern on the street next year, do him a favor and boo right in his face. He'll probably love it.

I can't stand all the political BS that comes with commissioners of major sports, but with regards to popularity and profitability of the current game, what else would you want?

Stern is the best, ever.

I don't know if we'll ever have another like him. Dude cracks me up like no other.

The 5 foot tall Manhattan lawyer with the last name Stern?

What a mystery.

"We've had to explain to our international audience that the boo is an American sign of respect." David Stern is hilarious.

I thought he was a horrible commissioner, but he went out like a freaking boss last night.

How could you possibly think he was a horrible commissioner? He's possibly the best commissioner of any US sport ever. Look at where the NBA and basketball in general was 30 years ago when he took over compared to today.

He fought to keep the Hornets/Pelicans in N.O. after Katrina.

I like him.

Regarding on-court matters, absolutely. When you see a boring game where the score is in the 70's, when you see a player suspended for having one foot on the court while there's a fight on the opposite end of the floor, or when you see a mysterious string of 3-second violations when a team is up by 18 late in the fourth, you can thank Stern for all this.

Regarding off-court matters--namely, how he handled the Magic Johnson situation and the global spreading of the game's popularity--he has been great.
