I'll be going out of Freeport, 40 miles sw of Galveston. First time that I'm out of my comfort zone in saltwater. I'm assuming the fishing is no live bait. I'm in an 18 ft xpress so I'll be in protected water. Any help is appreciated.

My dad told me he did a lot of fishing at san luis pass through college and it was one of the best spots. But that was back in the 70's. I got a yak recently and i'm looking for coast info as well. We fished off of the jetty's last weekend in Freeport and it was nothing but croakers stealing bate. Can't wait to bring my yak down and get out in the ocean.

Plenty of bait there if you want, they have shrimp in Texas BTW, all kinds of bait. Plastics will work there, read some reports TEXAS fish and Game. Call a guide if need be. Get a good map if you are going blind. Good luck , I used to Catch a lot of Kingfish a little bit off shore from there.

If you have next M-W off(winds are shifting and will flatten the surf), just drive down the beach in your truck. Stop when you see diving birds, wade out there and catch trout.

But seriously watch out for sharks, use a long stringer if you are going to do that.
