It makes sense that it would have started with an Italian.

It's the most annoying celebration among many, IMO, and I wanted to know why it started.

How is this annoying? It's such a simple celebration.

A lot of players do it after their wives/gfs have babies. For other's I'm not sure, perhaps the "it was so easy a baby could do it" was correct. I'd like to see them create a fire or a wheel to signify a caveman could do it.

Sampson: I do bite my thumb, sir.
Abraham: Do you bite your thumb at us, sir?
Sampson (to Gregory): Is the law of our side if I say ay?
Gregory: No.
Sampson: No, sir, I do not bite my thumb at you sir; but I bite my thumb, sir.
Gregory: Do you quarrel, sir?
Abraham: Quarrel, sir? No, sir.
Sampson: If you do, sir, I am for you: I serve as good a man as you.
Abraham: No better.
Sampson: Well, sir.
Gregory: (to Sampson) Say 'better'; here comes one of my master's kinsmen.
Sampson: Yes, better, sir.
Abraham: You lie.
Sampson: Draw, if you be men! Gregory, remember thy swashing blow.
(They fight)

What I always thought everytime I saw one of these celebrations.

I was under the impression biting your thumb was an insult, akin to

Totti was called up to senior side at Roma at age 16 and nicknamed Er Pupone (the "big" or "great baby") by the fans.

The nickname stuck and that's why he's always used the the celebration.

Not sure about the recent explosion of players doing it but I don't think it's any homage to Totti.

I AM SORRY FOR THINKING THAT'S WHAT THEY WERE DOING ... EXCUSE ME.

for being so dumb to think a sucking a thumb act was very similar to biting ones thumb.
