The other World Cup thread had me thinking about who could really help us next summer in Brazil, that is under the radar right now.
The Gold Cup will weigh heavily into filling the remaining spots on the roster, and the closer we get to next summer the more and more consistent the call ups will be. all that being said, my 2 guys who I want to see have a killer GC because I think they can help the senior team(when healthy) are Brek Shea, and Benny Feilhaber. Both have unique skill sets, especially Brek, he's uber athletic, tall, pacey, and left footed. Benny has vision, flair and playmaking abilities like few players in the US pool.

heres the Gold Cup roster for reference:

quote:

GOALKEEPERS: Tally Hall (Houston Dynamo), Bill Hamid (D.C. United), Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake) DEFENDERS: Corey Ashe (Houston Dynamo), DaMarcus Beasley (Pachuca), Tony Beltran (Real Salt Lake), Matt Besler (Sporting Kanasas City), Carlos Bocanegra (Racing Santander), Edgar Castillo (Tijuana), Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy), Clarence Goodson (Brondby), Oguchi Onyewu (Malaga), Michael Orozco-Fiscal (Puebla), Michael Parkhurst (Augsburg)

MIDFIELDERS: Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Alejandro Bedoya (Helsingborgs), Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo), Joe Corona (Tijuana), Mikkel Diskerud (Rosenborg), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders), Benny Feilhaber (Sporting Kansas City), Josh Gatt (Molde), Stuart Holden (Bolton Wanderers), Brek Shea (Stoke City), Jose Francisco Torres (Tigres), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City)

FORWARDS: Will Bruin (Houston Dynamo), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy), Herculez Gomez (Santos Laguna), Alan Gordon (San Jose Earthquakes), Eddie Johnson (Seattle Sounders), Jack McInerney (Philadelphia Union), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes), Bobby Wood (1860 Munich

I want Landy to grab that shite by the balls and prove to Jurgen that he still is one of our top 3 best players when in form.

Would also love to see another striker step up, preferably Boyd.

ETA: Oh frick, did not realize Boyd is not on the prelim roster.

I avoided picking guys like Stu and Landon because imo, their spots on the plane to brazil are safe. I was going for more fringe/bubble guys who could be under the radar right now.

I don't think Stu is safe, who knows what JK saw from him during training sessions, but we have yet to see if he has fully recovered from his injury.

He needs to have a good Gold Cup.

I guess I would like to see Mix step up. Only problem is that we have a shite ton of guys, not named Bradley or Jones, that could play the two CM spots, but they are pretty much locked down at the moment.

I guess I would like to see a winger step up, just in case we are forced to keep Fab Johnson at LB.

I don't know that Stu has a spot in Brazil yet; he's still a pretty big question mark.

My guys are him, Gatt, and Break. The more wing depth we can get the better. I've loved Brek since his breakout rookie year at FCD. He hasn't seemed to be able to perform at that level consistnetly since though.

Also, haven't been able to watch much of Gatt since he plays in the Noreweigan league. In addition to wanting to see him play well, I really just want to see him play in general.

I could get behind this.
I keep reading on here how good Joe Corona is, but I've never had the chance to see him play. I hope he gets real minutes, along with Josh Gatt.

From what I've seen Corona is more of a CAM guy. Like you said, it would be nice to see Brek step up on the left wing.

That being said, I feel pretty good about the team where we are presently.

If Landon and Cherundolo are in form and in the XI for 2014, I think we are either as good or better at every position compared to the 2010 team and the bench would be much deeper.

Gatt. We are playing very solid right now, obviously, but the biggest area of realistic improvement heading into Brasil would be width IMO. And Stu is a given, of course.

Not a breakout, more like a last gasp, but I would be interested in seeing if Gooch features, if at all, in the GC.

Definitely Brek Shea. He's got serious potential. I still remember his first appearance for the USMNT. He was making stuff happen! He's also from College Station. Both of his parents are professors at Texas A&M.

Gatt and Shea, Corona and Mix, McInerny and Bruin. Bedoya, too.

As for players I want to see play well, Stu, Donovan, Gooch, and Feilhaber come to mind.

I really wish Lichaj and Agudelo had been called in for this.

Definitely Brek and LD. Also want to see Beltran have a big cup. We need depth at all outside spots. Wish Lichaj had been included on the roster. Still think he is a very good LB.

Bedoya, Gatt, Shea, and Diskerud as we could use a wide midfielder to step up to give us depth in that position. Also I keep hearing good things about Jack McInerney. I'm interested to see how he does.
Also you can put me on the Lichaj bandwagon. He looked good at either fullback position when he has played for us.

Gooch and/or Bocanegra, because our CB depth sucks.

considering Besler and Gonzalez could use the Gold Cup to strengthen their partnership, I don't think Gooch or Boca will get a lot of PT.

First and foremost, I want to see Besler and Gonzalez play, and play well. 90 minutes, every game.

Secondly, I want Landon to captain the squad, play to his potential, and show a little dedication to the cause.

After those 2 things, I want to see youth.

That group of defenders is disappointing to me.

If Castillo is going to stay in the hunt for the WC squad, then I want him to play a lot in the Gold Cup.

I don't expect a ton out of Shea and Gatt, tbh.

Really interested in seeing what Bobby Wood can do. Don't want to see much of Wondo, Gordon, and Herc.

I'll go with Jack McInerney. We need some depth at striker behind Jozy.
