Will be recast in a potential third film.
The director, Marc Webb, is trying to make it sound like it was a creative decision for the story but it's probably cause she's a terrible actress.

she's seems to be under the impression her scenes are just going to be moved into the third film.
reaction to her casting was certainly lukewarm as far as fanboys on the internet were concerned. i wonder if that had anything to do with it.

That's a shame. I liked her a lot in "The Descendants"
There next move needs to be to pick Deborah Ann Woll (Jessica from "True Blood") or see if Karen Gillan (Amy from "Doctor Who") can do a halfway passable American accent.

There is nothing out there saying the role is going to be re-cast. Shailene Woodley is a pretty good actress as her performance in The Descendants clearly indicates. I have no doubt the role was cut to flesh out/conclude the Peter Parker - Gwen Stacy dynamic.

Correct. It's only unsubstantiated rumor at this point. Hopefully it stays that way.
I was actually looking forward to her playing MJ so hopefully they just move her to #3.
Shailene was quoted saying that, knowing the plot of part 2, it probably makes sense to have MJ debut in part 3.
