help a peasant...xbox dying and not sure of next move

Yesterday my xbox quit on me and gave me two red lights on the left side. Google shows this to be an overheating error. Thing is, the xbox is sitting on an open shelf (as is the power supply). Today it's done this 4 times and won't stay on more than 5 minutes - on the same day as the NCAA 14 demo naturally.
Anyway, I'm not sure if I can fix it or if I should suck it up and either replace it or wait it out for either xbox one or ps4. Does anyone have any solutions to fix this problem, or can you give me a valid reason I should preorder one system over the other?

Not intended to be bait, unfortunately. I'd rather wait until at least a few months after launch to see which console I'd prefer. But at the same time, I don't want to spend money on another 360.
