Whoops.

quote:

The president of the Ethiopia Football Federation, Sahilu Gebremariam, has admitted his side used a suspended player in a 2014 World Cup qualifier.

If Ethiopia lose the three points from their win over Botswana on 8 June it means South Africa can still progress.

Gebremariam has told BBC Sport that Minyahil Teshome Beyene should have missed the match having picked up two yellow cards in previous qualifiers.

"We're not going to appeal, it's a management blunder," he said.

"We have accepted the Fifa discipline issue."
Fifa announced on Sunday they would be investigating whether Ethiopia used an ineligible player.

It means that Ethiopia are almost certain to lose the three points from the win over Botswana, who will be awarded a 3-0 victory.

Should that happen, it would hand a lifeline back to 2010 World Cup hosts South Africa as they would only trail group leaders Ethiopia by two points going into the final round of matches in September.

Amazing that they got away with playing a guy with too many yellow cards in the first place...this would never happen in UEFA or even CONCACAF.

lol. Brazil have these music makers too. They were originally listed as the official music maker of the World Cup. But, then in some game (not Confed Cup). Maybe a Brazilian Cup final ? They were pissed off and throwing them on the field and it hurt a few people. So, now they are re-thinking the policy.

ETA: Caxirola. They are rain stick like instruments and they are used like macarenas. In the Salvador derby is where fans through them on the pitch. Surprised Freddy Adu didn't get knocked out. With his career, that would sound on course.

You'd think that a FIFA match official (who is at every one of these games) would see the team sheet before the match, realize that an ineligible player is on it, and would then say something.

Seems odd that it would even happen in the first place to lead to such sanctions. Especially for this reason, which is the most stunning thing.
