“Doc, we don’t know if that chemo is going to work,” Mendoza said. “But the College World Series always works.”
The CWS always works because of the people, the fans, the characters, the spirit. The new CWS could use some of that LSU mojo. Just make sure they turn right.
Epic.

Kinda reminds me of Scott Van Pelt's rant about the atmosphere at Tiger Stadium.

Excellent read, got goosebumps. However, it makes me that much more depressed that I can't make it.

I sent the dude a grateful email from our fanbase, thanking him for embracing our culture and for the kind words.
I have never been to Omaha, but for some reason, the article gave me goosebumps.

We like to toot our own horn a lot around here so it is nice when writers consistently do it for us and like you said, validate what we all know and believe is special.

The article really echoes the feelings of a lot of Omaha residents, hell at Barretts bar there is LSU stuff hung up 365 days a year.
Your fanbase as a whole is by far the most fun to party with and are genuinely nice people. You have a lot of fans up north rooting for your team to do good these next couple of weeks.

Thanks, but to hear Sooner fans tell it, half of us are in their face berating them while the other half is lurking in the bushes waiting for the right moment to jump out and rape their grandmother.

quote: It’s hard to describe, but here’s an old story to try. Back in the late 1990s, an LSU fan named Russell Mendoza was here on his umpteenth trip to the CWS, to follow his Tigers, party the week away. Only this time was different. This time, Russell had cancer. His prognosis wasn’t good. Mendoza canceled some appointments to chemotherapy in order to go to the CWS. He would die months later. But before his final CWS, Mendoza’s doctor asked him what was so important about going to Omaha. “Doc, we don’t know if that chemo is going to work,” Mendoza said. “But the College World Series always works.”
It's a crazy world. I actually knew Russell pretty well. He was married to my wife's cousin and we played quite a few rounds of golf together back in the 80's and 90's, and he never missed a family gathering. He was a great guy.
But here's the thing, I had never heard that quote he is credited with in the story. I'm just reading the story like every one else, and out of nowhere here is this little aside about my ole buddy Russell...knocked me for a loop.
Mad me a little sad, but in the end it made me more happy than sad and added to the great memories I have of him. Sounds just like the kinda thing he would have said! Here's to you Russell.
