I just started to get into them. A buddy at work lent me the box set and the London Calling album. Any recommendations or thoughts you want to share before I start devouring the catalog of music ahead of me? Thanks in advance

London Calling is one of the most fun and diverse albums I own. Safely in my all-time top 10.

the box set
?

Great band, their legend is disproportionately larger, IMO.

ETA What the frick was I thinking? They are ABSOLUTELY LEGENDARY.

I only have two albums, The Clash and London Calling.

The rest, well, that´s what MTV and friends were for (not enough meat there IMO, to assume the expenditure).

The Clash (their first) and London Calling are MONEY, big time.

Also, loved me some Topper Headon. Dude was a sublimely measured (compassed) freight train, on the kit.

The Clash, Give 'Em Enough Rope & London Calling are all essential... you probably get the best of the other three out of the box set, but I still think they are worth owning...

London Calling is easily one of the greatest records of all time..

Yep, forgot about this one (don´t own it, however).

I play two songs everytime I go to a bar with a jukebox:

Built to Spill - carry the zero
The Clash - police & thieves

No one at the bar appreciates as much as I do though

THE anthem for many, no doubt.

That first album was TOO MUCH.

The new box set coming out looks beyond awesome. I'm dead serious, you should wait for that and slap down the 150-200 bucks for the set. I'm looking forward to a decent master of Give Em Enough Rope.

Otherwise, I'd go this order:

London Calling
The Clash
Give Em Enough Rope
Combat Rock
Sandinista!
Super Black Market Clash

But them all. They are great.

Incredible band that was extremely versatile.

They can go from pop to "punk" to playing world music. Sandanista is a great example of the latter. Combat Rock and London Calling are great too. Really everything they do is good.

Lover's Rock, Train in Vain, Rock the Casbah, Death or Glory, Clampdown, Charlie Don't Surf, Police on my Back,

Also, they were one of the progenitors of the "punky reggae party" -- punk rockers playing reggae music (Mikey Dread produced their Sandinista! album) which inspired later bands like Bad Brains, 311, Massive Attack, Rancid, Sublime, No Doubt, etc.

I never liked Sandinista very much. I thought at least half of it was filler. Seems like every band that's around long enough does one 'fricking around in the studio' album.
