So this morning I went to turn the lights on my ceiling fan on and they popped, like when a bulb blows. The thing was all three of them were out. I went to the switch and flipped it off and back on and nothing. I went and got a new ceiling fan, hooked it up and still nothing. Should I try and change the switch next? Any help would be appreciated.

Eta...no thrown breakers, all other outlets and switches are working.

What do the wires look like in the ceiling box and how many switches?

Blown breaker.

Do you have a voltmeter did you check to see if wires at fan were hot?

You need a meter to check it. Sounds like you might have smoked the switch.

Used a volt meter at the fan, nothing. There is 3 switches on the wall, one is for my outside light, the one in the middle I have no clue what it does, the last one is the fan.

Definitely need a meter to check it. Doesn't sound like you are getting anything to your fan

No offense but it sounds like you need some experienced on hand help. Electricity kills

Yep.

If you didn't know to check the wires at the switch to see what was hot and what wasnt, you shouldn't fool with it. Not being an a-hole. That shite is dangerous.

I know I'm at the end of my knowledge, just wondering if there was a next step or somebody else that has experienced this. I used the volt meter at the fan, but didn't get a chance to check it at the switch. Had to go pick up my kids. Will check that tomorrow.

Checking at the switch should have been the first thing. That's easy to check and much less dangerous since you don't have to have dead man wires out to check it.

Just use common sense and think before you do anything and you'll be fine. DO NOT get yourself lit up behind a stupid light.

and before you start messing with electricity find the breaker that goes to that switch and flip it off.

BINGO!

Turn off the breaker for that feed. Some times the breaker doesn't look tripped, but is. Remove the switch from wall and remove the wires feeding the fan. Chances are you have a 3/12 wiring. If you do, two leads will be HOT. One to feed the fan and one to feed the light. The third is a ground wire. Colors of said wires should be Red/hot, black/hot and white/ground. Once you expose the wires at the fan/light and unscrew the switches at the wall, power up the breaker and check for voltage. Know that you ARE handling a HOT WIRE. Check voltage. Never use your right hand when doing so. Reason is if you get hit in your right hand, the shock will travel across your body.

As for as the three switches. One should feed the fan, one for the light and the third could feed a light in a closet.

How long have you been in this house? You need to mark all breakers and what they feed.

Also, every man should learn basic electrical work. It is easy to learn. One just needs the right tools, a good volt meter and a level head. There are some very good DVD's out there on this.
