Why was Malter Schobel fired? Seems like he was doing a good job with that program.

My bro's in-laws go to Cov and has inside scoop via a booster. He said rampant old town politics to blame. New princpl is alum and wants old coach's grandson in job. She wasted no time in firing after she being on job only weeks. Some disgruntled local businessman has been leading charge for years and happens to be friends with new princ bro in law. Also anticipated successful 2013 and would be harder to let him go next year.

I don't think he was doing a great job to be honest. They always have the biggest o and d lines and a plenty of talent, but never have the wins to show for it. He wasn't doing a terrible job by any means.

Sucks to hear him get shafted like that.

nola.com has a Covington parent who said he was being an arse on the sidelines and was booted up to coaching in the press box after they complained to the superintendent...

This ain't your daddy's Covington Lions..... Malter was fighting home grown politics from day 1. Didn't win. Malter Scobel is a good guy and a good coach - he will land on his feet.

as far as having a lot of talent - how many d1 signees in the last 10 years?

Covington thinks they should be good bc they were decent in the 70s and they beat St. Aug that one time...

I don't think they have been to the semis since the 80s.

That st aug game in 87 was one of the worst officiating games I have ever seen or even heard about.

There are three playoff games where I can truly say a team was robbed and that was one.

they weren't decent in the 70s.. they were awfully good in the 70s.. and through much of the 80s

Good Luck to coach Scobel as he appeals his termination as Head Football Coach at Covington HS. I believe this is a possible way to set a trend of getting back to where coaches should be able to coach and not have to put up with the shenanigans of booster clubs/parents to make these decisions. These people have families to feed and run. They have children they give up their time with to work with others kids. How would you like your job to be taken, without proper evaluation, for little Johnny, cousin of the boss, to get your job. I do not know Coach Scobel but I hope he wins his appeal for all the coaches out there.

The timing wasn't best, but it's obvious the new principal didnt like him from the start.

But, many parents complained about his on field antics, so much that he was banned from the sidelines and moved to the press box.

He was 26-26 in his 5 years, and 0-4 in the playoffs. And 0-5 against rival St Paul's and 1-5 against Mandeville.

That's not gonna cut it.

Def all politics. Covington has been solid and made the playoffs last few years. Tough draw against Mandy last year. This year they did really well in the spring game against D-han and were gonna have a stacked defense. A team goes 8-3 and the next year the coach gets fired as summer starts. Pretty ridiculous

Went 7-4 and 6-4 the past two years. And his .500 record isn't the entire reason. It's his mediocre record, winless in playoffs, 1-10 vs rivals, and most importantly, his antics and behavior on the sidelines. Really not someone you want representing your school
