Rod/reels for speck and reds

What would be the best set up to get? I am usually fishing live bait under a popper. Spinning or bait cast? What brand rod and reel?

I like bait casters but that is all personal preference.
Can't go wrong with a Curado on an All Star rod although my Castaway is one of my favorites and usually the one I grab. I also have a few Falcons I like.
I haven't bought rods or reels in quite some time so I'm sure something better has come along.

Curado or Calcutta on a 7' med/heavy rod. I use $50 Allstar classics for my rods.

I like baitcaster for almost all applications except under popping cork. I just picked up a Abu Garcia spin combo on Memorial Day sale. I don't feel I need the best of the best for a popping cork rod.

Abu Garcia revo or shimano bait casters for me
I like the all star classics. I also really like the cabelas XML and shimano crucial rods but they're pricier

Anyone ever try those Bass Pro extreme reels for specks/reds? For $60 they seem like a nice reel.

I have tried a couple bass pro feels in the past. And they are great reels, for a second. In my experience they turn to crap in about 3.9 seconds, and after that you kick yourself in the arse for going cheap.
Now I just spend the extra up front and go shimano. I'm sure other people make great equipment, but if you buy shimano, it's going to be quality.

Would your answer change at all if the user was rinsing and spraying reel magic on his reels immediately after every trip?

I use spinning tackle mostly for saltwater. The wind can be a bitch on the baitcasters.
The Shimano Sedonas are a good buy for the money. Along with Allstar or Castaway rods. You can get a decent rig for $100 - $120.

Baitcast-shimano Calcutta on a 7' MH.
Spinning-I like a penn 5500 on a 7' MH. It could be considered overkill, but it has a drag like no other.
Why?

You're better off IMO getting an H2O xpress mettle from academy for $50. Keep box and receipt, if breaks return to academy for new one. If you're going baitcaster.

It very well could, but that would never happen. I don't take care of my reels. I don't clean them ever. But I hardly need to. I still have silver calcuttas running strong. Replaced the bearings a couple times and they are going strong.

I can't just have 1 rod/reel for speck/red fishing. 7ft Allstar classic medium action w/Calcutta 151 when using lures and/or carolina rig. 7ft Allstar classic medium/heavy action w/Shimano spinning reel when using any type of cork and/or carolina rig

Shimano calcutta with castaway/ allstar/ falcon/ st croix 7-71/2 MH for carolina riging or workin plastics. Shimano spinning on abive mentioned spinning rod fir corks. Backlash constantly with baitcaster and corks.

I'm a fan of spinning reels. St. Croix 7' medium rods and Okuma reels have been solid for me.
