Can only speak with limited knowledge (mainly action films) but I'm curious of where the M/TV Board in.

Jimmy Stewart: appeared in his first movie 1934, last film role in 1994. Don't know if this is the longest time, but it is a long time. One of my favorites.

Strictly acting? Kurt Russell

If you want to throw in directing and other jobs, Ron Howard is a pretty solid choice.

John Wayne was still America's favorite film star as recently as 10 years ago.

Happy Birthday to him today, BTW.

First one that came to mind as well. And she was Tony Award nominated before she even made it to the screen.

Barbara Stanwyck

From The Locked Door in 1929 until near The Colbys in 1986...she was in simi retirement after The Big Valley (1969), she did come back to do The Thorn Birds and The Colbys.

That is only 40 years and of those she was one of the top 5 actresses from 29 until the mid 50's.
