re: Mayor-Elect of Jackson MS wants to remove Columbus' discovery of US from history

LINK This is a fairly balanced article, but here is a little bit about his background. They did not get into the really radical stuff.

quote:

Chokwe Lumumba (pronounced SHOW-kway Lu-MOOM-bah). An attorney who was active in a black nationalist group decades ago and still refers to a client as a "former Black Panther heroine" is running for mayor of Mississippi's capital city.

quote:

Lumumba, 65, has served the past four years on the Jackson City Council. He said there's no reason people should be concerned about his work in the 1970s and early 1980s with the Republic of New Afrika, which he said advocated "an independent predominantly black government" in the southeastern U.S. Lumumba was vice president of the group during part of his stint. The group also advocated reparations for slavery, and was watched by an FBI counterintelligence operation.

quote:

Lumumba was born in Detroit as Edwin Taliaferro, and changed his name in 1969, when he was in his early 20s. He said he took his new first name from an African tribe that resisted slavery centuries ago and his last name from African independence leader Patrice Lumumba.

Also, he represented Tupac in his murder trial and also Tupac's step-mother(?), who is now on the FBI's most wanted list.

why you trying to keep the man down? let him express himself how ever he wants. plus, books necessitate readers. most of the kids in that area can't read good.

This guy has potential to be the worst mayor in American history. No hyperbole either.

What about:

Larry Langford for Birmingham =

famous for being sentenced for conspiracy, bribery, fraud, money laundering, and filing false tax returns, put the city into a $3.2 billion sewer debt that basically was never built, ultimately forcing the city to declare bankruptcy in 2011 making Birmingham the largest US municipality to go bankrupt in history

The whole situation is sad. I think this going to further push the remaining white people to Madison, Ridgeland or rankin county

Worse than Kwame Kilpatrick of Detroit?

LINK

This is a guy who apparently had the Detroit PD whack a stripper involved with him and had the brass at the police department tank the investigation.

Loved that guy. My favorite was his proposal to dig a canal to Birmingham to get in on some of that sweet cruise ship action.

ETA:
quote:

Though Birmingham is more than 250 miles (400 km) inland from the Gulf of Mexico, Langford proposed that a canal be constructed from the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway so that cruise ships could dock in the city

LINK

Never mind that the Tenn Tom is 9 ft deep, and full of locks a cruise ship couldn't come close to fitting in or bridges it couldn't come close to fitting under.

Chokwe was once the vice-president of the Republic of New Afrika.

quote:

The Republic of New Afrika (RNA), is a social movement that proposed three objectives. First, the creation of an independent African-American-majority country situated in the southeastern United States. A similar claim is made for all the black-majority counties and cities throughout the United States. Second, the payment of several billion dollars in reparations from the US government for the damages inflicted on Africans and their descendants by chattel enslavement, Jim Crow segregation, and persistent modern-day forms of racism. Third, a referendum of all African Americans in order to decide what should be done with regard to their citizenship. Regarding the latter, it was claimed that African Americans were not given a choice in this matter after emancipation.

Has this guy ever picked up a history book? Even when I in grade school in the 80's we learned about Leif Erikson. I think he is arguing against something that doesn't exist.

So Jackson residents just vote for whatever black dude is on the ticket?

Also his proposal to host the OLYMPICS in Birmingham

Listen to it here:

No, all the candidates on the ticket in Jackson are black. They vote for the most radical, i.e. the one that hates white people the most.

In all fairness, there were a few different "black dudes" on the ticket. The Jackson residents just decided to elect the most militant and unabashedly racist black dude on the ticket

I can never take a people who sold their own into slavery seriously.
