Why do topic specific cable channels now show completely unrelated programs?

I was watching Ace Ventura on of all stations CMT. After that went off, the Country Music Television station began showing Dog The Bounty Hunter.

The Learning Channel used to show mostly science programs and real life medical shows. Now it is dominated by the likes of Honey Boo Boo.

My favorite shows on the Discovery Channel were Wild Discovery and Beyond 2000. Now I don't feel that I can get the same type of quality programing.

I feel like this all started with MTV and the so called reality shows. They introduced programs like Real World and Road Rules, and gradually got away from showing any real music programming.

Now every network is looking for the next great reality show, and I feel like they have completely alienated the original target audience. Also, these types of programs have now been diluted across multiple channels, and it makes cable pretty much unwatchable for me.

If it wasn't for ESPN I would cancel cable...

To be fair, TLC hasn't been "The Learning Channel" for like twelve years or something. They rebranded as simply TLC, and started showing whatever they air now.

How about Court TV rebranding itself as TRU TV and then launching a bunch of scripted, fake reality shows like Operation Repo, lizard lick towing, etc.

Fair enough. I realize they still show some of the original type of shows in limited capacity. I'm not saying that everything on these channels was wildly entertaining, but I feel that it was kind of sad when MTV had to create MTV2 to keep showing music.

"Reality" shows get the demo advertisers want -- young females. Conventional wisdom is females make most of the buying decisions, and younger people are more willing to switch brands.

FWIW MTV never really got high ratings with music videos. What they got was the desirable demo. Then the Real World et al came along and they got the same demo with higher ratings.
