Truck Gun - 9mm Deringer

Team Gun-
Would a 9mm Deringer be a good truck gun? I'm not interested in anything super charged, but want something small & reliable that
will not be a big loss if stolen. I'd feel much better with that being taken than a semi-auto or revolver in a criminal's
hands.
If I am getting a gun from the truck, it's a close situation (gas tank, parking lot, etc.) and I can see the danger
approaching or it's happening with someone coming to my truck with me in it - meaning I can drive away.
Think about getting one to knock around with. Thoughts?

get a subcompact .45 for the close distance situations your truck could come across.

Hi-point is an option...
Ugly as hell but they are cheap reliable and are pretty accurate.
a 9mm will run you about 165.00 in my neck of the woods.

In the event that you have a genuine reason to employ a handgun, you are going to want a hell of a lot more than a derringer. I understand you want to balance cost and such, but if the goal is to defend yourself, you would be best served with a "real" gun.
There are LOTS of small, inexpensive, and effective pistols available. Semi auto or revolver is probably the first question you want to answer, from there you can narrow your options.

You can get a used 38 special smith and wesson model 10 for under $300.
Or as someone else pointed out.. Hi Point. I wouldn't get the 9mm option as they aren't as reliable as the 45. But the costs of them are usually under $200.

Here is my personal criteria for a truck gun:
1. Powerful enough to shoot through my door and into a person standing on the other side.
2. Not so powerful that it will go through 3 cars
3. Not so powerful that it will stun me if I fire it from inside my vehicle with the windows up.
I might shy away from a 9mm Deringer based upon #3 above. I suspect that such a short barrel could really ring your bell if fired inside your cab.

The local gun store I go to also has one the best indoor ranges in the country. I was talking to the sales guy yesterday and we just so happen to be standing in front of the 5-6 hi-points they had. He said they have shot them and during one of there test it out shot the sig they where using..LOL
Guy I work with has the 45 he keeps in his car...and he swears on a sand bag rest he gets tighter groups with this hi-point then his Kimber...

Considering your cost issues, I'd go with one of the following:
Any .38 revolver (no snubbies)
Bersa 9mm autoloader (any barrel length)
Bersa 380 autoloader (at least 3.25" barrel length to get adequate performance)
Hi-Point .45 or 9mm autoloader that is proven to be reliable (gonna have to put some rounds through it first)

I have a hi point 9mm that was given to me years ago. shite quality is an overstatement. Very loose feeling and poor fit and finish. Also very inaccurate. But it goes bang every damn time. That is one thing I cant knock. And I shoot it alot because I end up taking it a lot of place with me to mess around since Im not worried about it getting beat up.

A Hi-Point pistol straight out of the box.
Hi-Point pistols seem to fall into 2 categories...freaking awesome and pieces of shite.
I would assume a Hi-Point pistol is a piece of shite until 500 rounds have been run through it.
It must earn it's "reliable" status.

A makarov is a greta truck gun as they are inexpensive and utilize the blow back design of the Walther.

no way I would put a derringer or other low end gun in my truck. The way I look at it, anytime I need a gun, I want one I trust.
If it getting stolen is the worry, there are plenty of used guns that are affordable. I wold rather something cheap like a Taurus or than a high point
or deringer.
Other good choices are Ruger p95 and sr9 guns.
