So I'm debating timing the market

Don't look at me like that.
I know, I know.
It's a bad move as a general investing practice.
But I'm wondering if it's a bad move as well regarding lump sum buy ins.
I just feel like I'll kick myself if I drop 5k now only to have it tumble a month from now.
It's also a retirement account, so 5500 yearly inflow cap so it matters more than otherwise regarding the quantity of shares that can be purchased.

When people feel this way, I always say then don't invest.
But won't you be kicking yourself in a year when there hasn't been any draw back.

Is this insurance or a retirement account?

if there is any time to do it it's right now. the ONLY reason why i say it is bc we have a constant right now (qe) that is artificially rising the markets. you'r problem will be timing it right in terms of getting out. just my .02

Exactly my thoughts.
It's good markets now, but it's an artificially inflated house of cards.
And the destination is a ROTH Ira broke.

IF the IRS scandal led to tax reform, IF other changes occurred in DC . . . NatGas emphasis etc., the markets might not look back even as the QE faucet is closed down.
It's always a best guess.
Put funds in play incrementally if the downside risk leaves you hesitant.
