I don't venture over here often but noticed some kayak threads and thought maybe y'all could help me out. I live in the Atlanta area and plan on buying a kayak to use on the Chattahoochee (class I and II) and nearby lakes for rec use, maybe some fishing, and perhaps a longer day trip. I'm looking for a sit-in and I think 10'-12' would be ideal consider my budget. I'm hoping to spend less than $600.

I've looked at the Perception Prodigy 10, which is on sale 15% off at $425 (before tax) at REI. I also found a used Wilderness Systems Pungo 120 for $650 but I think I can negotiate it down to $550 or less. Any experience with these two kayaks or recommendations on what else I should keep an eye out for?

either of those two will be just fine. i don't have any experience with them but here ya go....wilderness systems and perception are owned by the same company (Confluence Watersports). Retired hull designs from wilderness systems are released under perception and west marine (my yak is a pompano 120 which is the same as the circa 2008 tarpon 120/pescador 12). either yak will be solid but If you can swing the 12' go with it, the extra two feet really does matter.

Thanks. I didn't realize Confluence owned both. If I can get the Pungo 120 for $550 then it seems like a great deal.

Longer is not necessarily better if you start looking at white water applications.

Visit local outfitter. They will have demo days where you can try different boats out. You will learn more in one afternoon there then weeks searching the Internet.

I have a Perception Carolina 14. I was leaning toward a 12 foot until I paddled both at a demo day. Within 5 minutes I knew the 14 was what I should get.

Demo days are relaxed type of events. No high pressure selling. They just bring out there whole line of Boats and let you try them. Even if you don't buy their boat, you'll be a customer for accessories, paddles, rack systems etc. so don't feel bad if you don't buy the brand they have. Plenty of opportunity to give them other business once they educate you on the sport.

i agree longer isn't better for whitewater but you can roll a canoe through most I's and II's. If you plan on doing any fishing get the 12.....if not you might should roll with the 10 for ease of trasport/maneuverability.

I won't be doing any WW for now. I'd love to get into it eventually. I might do some fishing and the owner of the used Pungo added rod holders.

The Pungo 120 is 48 lbs I think. Would a boat that size be easy to load/unload from my car by myself?

mine is 60'lbs if im not mistaken and i don't have any problem moving it from my yard to the truck to the launch and back. rod holders are key imo. i have three built into my yak and i added the small igloo marine with two more pvc pipes mounted as rod holders. I generally take three rods and a net and save my forward rod holder for the one i'm using at the time.

That's not a heavy boat so you should be ok.

My perception 14 is over 55 pounds. Not bad getting it on the top of a car, but it sucked getting on the roof of my ford expedition. Had to buy a step ladder. Not fun after a long day of paddling.

I just found a used Perception Carolina 14.5 w/ a rudder for $500. Is this too much boat for a beginner or is this a deal I should take advantage of compared to my other options?

I'd grab it quick if its in good shape. Long enough to go good distances. I did a 135 mile race in mine. Very maneuverable due to having a rudder. Cockpit is big and boat is very stable. Not perfect, but you could easily fish out of it as well.

Most people start off with a short boat and quickly decide they need a longer one. That length is perfect.

Just heard back from the seller and he sold it last night. Bummer.

Be fore warned, your legs are gonna get REAL HOT sitting in an enclosed Yak. Also, I don't know how far north and west Black Wasp range but they are quite prevalent on the water ways I use. Should you slip through the branches of over hanging trees with a nest of Black Wasp, you are going to need to unarse that kayak PDQ.
