I want to buy one mainly to download the virtual classics. This will consist of mainly old mario games. Has anyone done this, is it easy to do? I literally know nothing about the wii. Any pointers would be good.

If that's all you want to do with it, you might as well get a Wii U. Same marketplace material + newer stuff and it has full backward compatibility with the Wii (including upscaling of Wii titles).

yea, but the old games from virtual console look better on an on standard definition/tube using the wii

wii U is HD and will put those games in widescreen which will look shitty

actually, I cant even stand playing the Wii on my hdtv because it looks grainy. looks much better on my old sony

This. And just buy usb controllers for whichever console's games you're going to play.

Hadn't really thought about the hd TV thing. That is all I have. I just wanted to play Mario for cheap on a TV. I guess I could always go the computer route but mine is crap.

Edit: wanted the wii because it is a cheap option.

agree with the other fellas saying get emulator. Basically you can own every Nes, SuperNes game ever made. You can put it on a tablet with blue tooth and connect a wii controller even...(credit to Sidbarret he set mine up to do so)

There are only a hand full of Virtual Console games available on the Wii U (although all of them can be accessed from the Wii menu.)

If all you want to do is play the older console games I would get just the Nintendo Wii. You can spend less than 100 dollars and be set.

If you go the Wii U route, you will spend over 350 dollars for the machine alone and you will still have to get Wiimotes in order to play the virtual console games.

Granted, they don't look as good as PS3, or 360, games but that is to be expected but I've never had a problem with my Wii looking bad on my tv. Nor, have I ever thought "man these graphics suck and detract from the gameplay."

The only problem I had with the Wii was the retarded motion controller. If a game didn't have classic control functionality I refused to play it.

This wasn't always a bad thing, these games may have been few and far between, but there were a few developers that really took full advantage of the motion controller.

Metroid Prime 3 Corruption
Medal of Honor: Heroes 2
Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2
The Conduit

were just a few that managed to utilize these features of the wiimote for the better.

Then again, if you are just looking to play the Virtual Console games, then you don't have to worry about this at all.

Surely there's no way you can argue that Galaxy used the motion controller. The only inclusion of it was gathering star bits and to activate jumps (which easily could have been assigned to a button).

You can't really assign a onscreen pointer to a button.

I said the activation of jumps was able to pushed to button rather than waggle.
