IGN

Twitter can be an interesting place to voice your opinions, and EA’s Bob Summerwill – a Senior Software Engineer and Architect – has sounded-off there with his thoughts about Nintendo’s struggling Wii U console. His comments, of course, follow EA's admission that it has no Wii U games in development.

According to Summerwill’s LinkedIn page, he’s worked at Electronic Arts since January of 1999, and has previous experience at Psygnosis, which was later purchased by Sony, turned into Sony Liverpool, and subsequently shut down.

We’ve reached out to EA concerning Summerwill’s comments and will update when we hear back.

This is what he's referring to in his third tweet.

An EA employee telling Nintendo to "Just make great games!" is the most hilarious thing I have read all day.

I get the irony, but I see his point. He's not telling them that they NEED to make great games. He acknowledges that they do but they can't figure out the console market.

But I'm pretty sure it will be a cold day in hell before a Zelda or Mario game show up on anything but a Nintendo system.

Pot, meet kettle. If EA made great games they might be taken a little more seriously.

Nintendo consoles worked when most games on each console were exclusive to that one console, like back in the nes, snes, n64 days.

Nowadays most games are cross platform so it makes you wonder wtf nintendo is smoking.

Not something you need to be an engineer to figure out.

Bad week for Nintendo. They have made it to where if you upload any of their games on Youtube they get the split ad revenue from it and that's retroactive too so all videos with Nintendo games on Youtube the split ad revenue goes to them now instead of the uploader. The Youtube community has quit uploading Nintendo content due to this.

A lot of other publishers and devs have come out and said how stupid this is on Nintendos part because Youtube drives sales now days more than normal advertising does. They also said it would be like claiming ad revenue IGN or someone makes off of articles with Nintendo reviews.

I feel like it started with the WiiU but we might be seeing the beggining of the end of Nintendo as we know it. Phones and tablets will kill off the handheld market soon enough and Nintendo will really have nothing left. They will be reduced one day to what Sega is now.

I read an article about that yesterday but didn't really get what they were going for. They said they didn't want to take the videos down, but they are wanting to make money off of it now. That the general idea?

Yes. If you upload a vid with Nintendo content on your channel they get the ad revenue instead of you. They can claim Nintendo copyrights site wide on Youtube now. They will really shoot themselves in the foot with this I think.

Youtube, especially for gaming, is the best social media advertising you can get these days. Especially when you have guys like Pewdepie or Seananners that get 500k and 200K views a vid. It costs you nothing really since the ad revenue from the vid is money you didn't have in the first place. It's free advertising of your game. I bet a single commercial for a game doesn't reach 500k gamers at once.

Notch from Minecraft said they had come close to doing the same thing at first but glad they didn't because in the long run people uploading videos about the game drove their sales.

Being that EA and Nintendo's relation is a lot similar to North and South Korea, I don't find this surprising.

Also, it's hilarious that he says only Zelda and Mario make money when there's so much data that throws that statements out the window (especially considering that Zelda has diminished so much as a franchise).

Dude is clearly mad.

quote:

Nintendo are still operating like it's 1990

Yup. N64 and Gamecube were the most powerful consoles of their generation yet were outsold by weaker platforms. They opted not to go for power with the Wii and they outsold everyone. Exact opposite of their plans in the 90s and 00s.

Not to mention they dominate the handheld market.

quote:

They should have "done a Sega" and offered Mario/Zelda as PS4/Durango exclusives

Why would the largest game company stop making consoles and license their games out to competitors? Dude is an idiot.

Xbox was more powerful than the Gamecube and actually had games in HD.

But yes, it is true that the weakest console has won every generation for the past 5 generations.

I believe they were close, but I'm not 100% certain about the comparison between Xbox and GCN, so I'll take your word on it. I do know that the 'cube was more powerful than the PS2 which whipped everyone's arse in that generation.

Right now I'm not sure what the future of the WiiU will hold. I have a feeling that the trend of the weakest console winning will not hold this generation, but I know the WiiU will pick up once games start launching later this year.

I'm sorry for speaking some truth. Would it make you feel better if I started sucking off the PS4 as hard as you are?

Later this year the other two consoles drop and will have features that the WiiU just doesn't have. Games are only going to do so much to drive people to the WiiU and then it will mostly be their loyal fans that want to see how Nintendo can shove Mario into yet another game.

Nintendo will have had a whole year ahead of the other two and failed to seize the opportunity. Why? Not because of lack of games but because the gimmick gaming crap is over. Kinect and PS move included.

Everyone bought a WiiU then after a month or two the gimmick wore off and they were left to collect dust. You will have your loyal fanbase like I said but the people that bought a Wii for the gimmick of motion play aren't falling for a gimmick (yes the WiiU with the tablet is a gummick) again.
