US seizes operator accounts of major Japanes Bitcoin exchange

LINK

quote:

US authorities seized the accounts of a Bitcoin digital currency exchange operator, claiming it was functioning as an “unlicensed money service business,” court documents showed Friday.

A warrant revealed by the Department of Homeland Security showed a judge signed the seizure order Tuesday for the accounts of Mutum Sigillum LCC, a subsidiary of Japan-based Mt. Gox, the world’s biggest Bitcoin exchange.

The warrant said the account based on the electronic payments platform Dwolla and held at Veridian Credit Union “was used to move money” as “part of an unlicensed money service” in violation of US law.

The US law enforcement action creates doubts about the future of Bitcoin, a mysterious digital currency which saw a flurry of interest this year which some called a bubble.

not much will likely come of it. and even if mtgox did get shut down, it'd probably be good for the bitcoin community because everyone is tired of their shit

Moving faster against bitcoin than Enron or Stanford financial?

I thought bitcoin was a joke, and the worldwide market for it right now is about, what, $1B?

Awful lot of attention for drop in the bucket scam.

I'm not a big fan of banking secrecy laws or anti-money laundering laws. However, I realize they do exist, and there are agencies to enforce them. It is unrealistic to think that governments are going to ignore something like Bitcoins that can be used to circumvent their laws.

It was foolish of MtGox to blatantly thumb its nose at the U.S. government.
