Designated hitter Michael Fernandez blasted a grand slam as part of a five-run third inning to propel Florida Christian into the regional final with a 7-4 victory over Westminster Christian in the Region 4-3A semifinals Tuesday.
With the score tied at 2, the bases loaded and one out, Fernandez pulled a 2-2 fastball from Westminster reliever Trevor Enriquez about 350 feet over the left-field wall to give host Florida Christian a four-run lead it would not relinquish against its district rival in front of a standing-room-only crowd of about 450 fans.
“Best feeling I’ve ever had,” Fernandez said. “I saw the pitch and did what we worked on in practice.”
The Patriots (17-12) advance to face Coral Springs Christian, which they defeated in an extra-inning affair in the regular season.
Florida Christian starter Chris Pelaez struck out six in his four-plus innings. He left the game with the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the fifth, and two of those runners came across to score to finish his line with four runs — three of them earned — on four hits, six walks and two hit batters.
Alex Valverde came on in relief of Pelaez to earn a three-inning save. He had to get out of bases-loaded jams in the fifth and sixth innings.
“That’s kind of been our story all year,” Florida Christian coach Chris Brigman said. “We’ve been pitching out of jam after jam after jam.”
Valverde finished off the Warriors (17-9-1) by striking out leadoff man John Gonzalez looking. Gonzalez had to be restrained by Westminster coaches after words appeared to be exchanged between he and Patriot players as they began celebrating.
Florida Christian leadoff man Mike Tosar went 2 for 3 and scored three runs.

Florida Christian Patriots advance with comeback

After digging themselves into an eight-run hole, the Florida Christian Patriots powered their way to a 13-12 comeback victory — and a trip to the state tournament — in a wild Region 4-3A final against Coral Springs Christian.
“We’ve been through so much and this is such a huge lift for us,” Florida Christian coach Chris Brigman said. “These guys refuse to quit.”
Pitching was problematic for both squads on Friday night with the teams combining for 25 runs, but just 13 hits.
The Crusaders took advantage of the Patriots’ spotty pitching as the game commenced, scoring three in the first and adding five more in the second to take a commanding 8-0 lead.
But the Patriots stormed back in the bottom of the second with a 10-run outburst highlighted by a three-run home run by left fielder Chris Granada to spark the rally, and a three-run double by designated hitter Michael Fernandez to give Florida Christian its first lead of the game.
After the Crusaders tied the game again with two runs in the third, Patriots right fielder Erik Montero responded, taking a two-out, two-strike pitch over the left field wall for a three-run blast to put Florida Christian back in the lead, this time for good.
A two-run home run by Crusaders’ starting pitcher Touki Toussaint made it a one-run game in the seventh inning, giving the Patriots a late scare. But reliever Chris Pelaez held on for the save, striking out the final two batters to bring the game to a close.

This is not a thread for that discussion. If you want to complain about the way scholarships and signees are handled, start a new thread about it. I may even join you in that conversation. But this thread is to celebrate the players we have committed and educate those that may not know much about them.

A little bit on the JUCO kids we've signed...
- David Palladino the other day threw 5.2 innings, which is 17 outs, and struck out 13 batters for Howard College. He's 7-3, with 6 complete games in 10 starts, and in 70.1 innings he's given up 57 hits and 31 walks with 99 strikeouts (12.67 per nine innings) and an ERA of 2.18. At 6-9 and 270 with a 96-97 MPH fastball he might get drafted too high to make it here, but if he doesn't that might be your Sunday starter.
- Brady Domangue is 13-2 with a 1.26 ERA for LSU-Eunice. In 92.2 innings, he's given up just 75 hits, walked 25 and struck out 105 batters (9.48 per nine innings). Six complete games in 15 starts.
- Zac Person is 8-0 with a 3.14 ERA at LSU-Eunice. In 71.2 innings he's given up 51 hits and 41 walks (which is too many), but he's had 87 K's (10.93 per nine innings).
- Connor Hale is hitting .358 for State College of Florida Manatee-Sarasota, with 17 doubles, 3 triples and one home run. In 50 games he's got 58 RBI. He's also stolen 9 of 11 bases.
- Kade Scivique is on a horrible team at Southwest Mississippi JC, but he leads that club with a .321 batting average. He has 12 doubles and four homers, with 39 RBI's in 140 at-bats, numbers which are good but not great until you look at the fact that nobody else has more than six doubles, the team has 5 HR's (he's hit all but one) and the next best RBI guy only has 22. Safe to say teams aren't giving Scivique much to hit, though he's only got 13 walks. But has hasn't thrown out anybody trying to steal, according to the stats.

havent been keeping up with baseball recruiting as much as i should have, who is expected to actually make it to campus that is a great player, also who is the guy that will be the big hitter in this years class

Apologies, this was a semi-final, not the state final. Palaez had a great game but lost a 1-0 battle.

Florida Christian’s Chris Pelaez threw a great game, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Central Catholic.

FORT MYERS -- Florida Christian pitcher Chris Pelaez sat down after Monday’s game with bag of ice strapped to his shoulder and exhaled.
Pelaez had just thrown 125 pitches hoping to keep the Patriots memorable, topsy-turvy baseball season going.
But that grueling effort wasn’t enough in a frustrating 1-0 loss to Melbourne Central Catholic in a Class 3A state semifinal at JetBlue Park.
“It’s been an up-and-down year… really a roller-coaster ride,” Pelaez said. “It showed our heart and our resilience. It was a good run.”
Pelaez’s complete-game effort came in Florida Christian’s first trip back to the state final four since 2006.
The senior LSU signee struck out seven and allowed only five hits.
But the one run he gave up in the top of the fourth proved to be the difference when John Capra hit a single that scored Cam Lierman.
Florida Christian (18-13) was stymied at the plate despite often making good contact off Central Catholic pitcher A.J. Smith. But often potential hits were taken away by solid defensive plays by Central Catholic, including the final at-bat.
Moments after catcher Zach San Roman singled to keep the game going, Michael Fernandez hit a line drive that third baseman Nick Capra quickly reacted to catch, preventing another hit and ending the game.
The Patriots also had a chance to tie the score in the fifth when Fernandez and A.J. Puigcerver singled to give Florida Christian two runners on with one out. But Smith got Kevin Roque to ground into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
Central Catholic advanced to play Jacksonville Providence for the Class 3A championship on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
“We knew those guys were very well-disciplined and well-coached,” Florida Christian coach Chris Brigman said. “We felt our approaches at the plate were solid. But they just made every play. It was frustrating, but that’s baseball.”
Brigman, who finished his first season coaching the team, has been with the program for 11 years and took over for longtime coach Ernie Padron last summer. Following the transition, the team opened the season with a 10-3 record.
The Patriots later endured an eight-game midseason losing streak that began with a tough outing at the National High School Invitational in North Carolina.
Florida Christian bounced back with a solid playoff run, which included a district championship and two wins over rival Westminster Christian.
Pelaez’s season reflected the team’s as well.
Ailing from a muscle strain, Pelaez wasn’t truly himself on the mound until late in the season when he picked up three crucial wins.
The team also learned before coming to state that starting pitcher Andrew George would have season-ending surgery to repair a muscle tear above his rotator cuff. George had successful surgery Monday.
“Even in defeat [Monday], no one will know how much these guys accomplished this season,” Brigman said. “I’m so proud of their willingness to never give up.”

Kade's numbers scare me
This kid is really good. My son played against him in HS. He was an all state a couple of times in class B at Maurepas. He was the MVP at the La all star game.Holden has a kid that is going to be really good also(don't know if LSU is looking at him) , Ray Hutchinson. He will be a senior next year.He is also a Multi all state selection batting over 500 with 8 HR's this past season. He has been clocked in the low 90's on the mound
They have some good talent at these small schools in LP
