Why not just get thermal imaging scope. I've got one and it's badass. Can use it day or night and can help find animals in thick cover you likely wouldn't see. Works in fog etc.

ETA-the one I got is the thor 320 3x. Now it's more than $5k but they have models with less range and magnification for closer to 5k. And I believe th thermal imagers last longer than night vision optics.

I've got a Gen 2 scope and I like it, but toting it around attached to a Larue .308 is cumbersome. I want my family and me to be able to look out over fields at night before getting a gun. What kind of thermal scope do you have and attached to what type gun?

Mine is more expensive cause it is a scope. Flir makes some damn good handhelds that may even be below your price range.

Mine is on a Ruger sr 556, I want a an AR 10 to put it on but haven't decided on which one. Larue is a damn good one and made in Texas so it is on my list.

I think you'll be more pleased with thermal imaging. It'll help you spot animals that are obscured by cover or sitting still waaaaaay better than night vision. I use mine to spot small game as well. Squirrels, rabbits, coons cannot hide from it. I will use it detached during the day and just walk along spotting them, then pop them with my .22

Few hundred yards. I've shot out to 250 with no issue. The colder it is and the more heat contrast the better the range is. You can see heat signatures out to 1300 yrds, but there just blobs once they get too far away. I was playing one day and had a 4 pt scoped in at a little over 400. Could tell real well it was a deer, but could not see the rack til I got closer. It was real warm that day though. When it's cold, passive body heat will let you see what's on their heads.

Short answer-as far a you can shoot.

My friend lives down the road and on a cool night I could see him pissing in his backyard. I could see his stream and piss spot from 200+ yards away.
