Hey guys I suppose this would be the proper board to post to. Just got an acoustic never really dabbled that much with guitars. Pretty busy guy w/ work and all. I am trying to find some good sites that will help me learn this thing the right way. So if you got any you can recommend, I would greatly appreciate. TIA

I've got an acoustic guitar I've had for years and want to finally put it to use. So I'm going to piggyback the advice they give you.

Have you literally never strummed a note on guitar, or do you know a few simple chords already?

How much do you know? If you don't know anything then you probably need to just work on learning chords and getting them to sound clear when you strum them.
If you already know chords then I'd go to ultimate guitar.com and find the songs I wanted to learn and go from there

The best thing you can do IMO is buy a book with the basic chords, and get comfortable with them. Then buy a book with the basic scales, and practice them until you can do them forwards, backwards and any pattern you can think of. Then start learning songs. Most people will never be patient enough to go this route though.
For most people and probably the quickest results, I'd recommend youtube. There are literally thousands and thousands of tutorials on youtube now. They even have entire channels dedicated to stuff for beginners. Find a guy you like and go with that.

Who are your favorite artists? Just find some songs that use basic chords and look up the the chords and get started. Play G chord over and over again. Play C over and over again. Transition G to C over and over again.

Justin Guitar is easily the best site for what you are looking for.

lemme guess, Smoke on the water?
I know you said you're strapped for time but getting lessons from someone sounds like the way to go IMO.

Download a pdf of a chord chart for basic major and minor open chords.
Learn where to position your fingers for all of the basic chords. Make sure to use your finger tips so that they are perpendicular to the fret board, and you're not using the pads of your fingers.
Strum the fretted chords to this. Practice going from one chord to the other with this as well.
Once you've developed some muscle memory for a few chords and have a basic sense of timing down between your right and left hand do what I tell everyone new to the guitar to do:
Search youtube for "Marty Schwartz beginner lesson".
Have fun!

Marty or Justin are very good teachers online, like above posts stated. There is also threechordguitar.com which I used a little when I first started

Pretty good all around site for info or if you would like to see scales across the neck. Also has a chord namer function and search.
Good Community of folks @ Jazzguitar.be also, top notch info but probably slightly advanced for you at this time. There are a few guys who post that actually write for guitar magazine so some lessons get linked straight from the forums.
Best of luck man....time on the instrument is important.
