I'm playing FF VII. Kill a hardass boss that takes me 25 minutes AND I get a hardass steal (protect ring). My characters are obviously fricked up post fight. Cid is dead, Cloud and Tifa are hanging on by 150-200 HP. I leave the boss room expecting a save point. Nope. I take a step. Random battle. Get hit with Quake 3 and I'm obliterated. frick this game. TIA

Really though. X was wayyyyy better. 8 was better. 9 was even better.

Not sure how you can have that much trouble. Heal up after a boss fight. You are either new to FF or just very unprepared.
I actually just finished 7 again today. So this is a pretty cool Coincidence. I haven't played through in a long time, the translations can be brutal. Didn't really notice that in my younger days.

9 is easily my favorite. But unless you are a youngin the first play through of 7 was the best because of how great it was at the time.

I usually do, I just had a tent that I was gonna use to save items (I was out of mp so no restore/revive). Took a step to check, didnt see one turned to leave, and I literally took a step to backtrack and bam. Back attack or whatever, and I'm history

And to the OP, yes the save system is beyond ridiculous.
Then again, I just use an emulator on my PC and can save whenever I want

well, yeah, as a rule all kids in rpgs are fricking terrible imo so they always get thrown out of my assessments as outliers.
