He went on the air and said that he took himself off the draft board and signed a three year deal with Philly while the draft was going on.

Isn't this illegal to do during the draft?

Yes players that are confident that they won't be drafted can do this. Or at least I was watching something that was talking about a guy doing it. I'll try and find a link.

Doesn't matter. Quarterbacks can do whatever they want

I'd love to know...

RS seemed really flip about the situation and Moscona asked him again "Did you really take yourself off the board during the 5th round and sign with Philly?" He replied "Yes".

I'm sure he started fielding calls about signing as an UDFA while the draft was still going. Maybe he's trying to add more juice to that.

might point exactly, this story sounds like him and his buddies came up with it an hour before going on AFR this afternoon.

"Coach Kelly called me and said they wanted to take me in the 5th round, but were out of draft picks. So, Coach Kelly said you can sign with us right now if you take yourself off the board?"

wtf.

I called in.

What is to stop anyone from doing this and signing with any team?

LOL, not true. If somehow it is true, I'm sure Chip Kelly knows what to expect from an investigation

ETA: if only jarvis jones would've taken his name off the board before the steelers picked him!!

A team can draft your NFL rights. Any contract outside of that draft pick would be null and void.

sounds like total bs. Unless there is a specific rule that they agreed to allow it past a certain round. Or else, every top player would take themselves off the board and sign with whoever they wanted one pick into the draft.

Whats funny is even if this was true, i dont think "him taking his name off the board" would have changed his draft status at all

He knew he wasn't going to be drafted. He just went ahead and got him a contract.
