Think about this. For them to be worse, they would have to be the worst defense in HISTORY. Let that sink in. Let it simmer.
Not totally out of the realm of possibility. I'm praying that Ryan will add just enough spark under their asses to rise to that lofty position of "Middle of the road"...Bress will take care of the rest.

I think the biggest thing is it fits our front 7 personnel better than the 4-3.
JR Galette and Martez Wilson are too small to play 4-3 defensive end. With both of these guys standing as OLB, it gives them a better opportunity to use their speed.
Curtis Lofton, as a thumper, fits in well on the inside.
Will Smith, who has outgrown 4-3 DE, has the perfect body type to step in and play 34 DE.
Bunkley's 3-4 prowess has been well documented
Cam Jordan thrived in a 3-4 in college. He'll fit in nice.
now with the hopeful new pass rush, getting after the QB, it will allow our DBs to make plays and to be able to play WR's for a shorter time.
Then we have new additions
- Victor Butler has OLB experience in Ryan's defense.
- John Jenkins is your prototypical 3-4 nose tackle.
- Kenny Vaccaro will hopefully help out in coverage. Most importantly against TEs that have eaten our lunch
those are just a few reasons i think we'll be better

Something most people overlook, but is not to be taken for granted:
Sean Payton is an excellent game-day coach who knows how to control momentum. Rather than focus on stats and single plays, Payton knows how to control momentum. If he needs the offense to slow down and kill clock in order to rest the defense and cool off the opponent, he can do(and has done) exactly that. The difference he alone will make vs last year's inexperienced group of guys taking the big seat for a day is huge.

Defensive End: Improvement. The scheme switch alone will mean that the pressure of getting to the QB will not be squarely on their shoulders, unlike in the Spags scheme. They switch to more containment defense. Cam Jordan will be the biggest benefactor of this change. Also look for Galette to be used in this role, he might do pretty well in it. He's great at moving laterally and will be effective at containing the run and applying some pressure to the QB
Chad said the OP gave everyone to show a chance how smart they are. On the basis of the bolded part of that quote, how have failed the test.

Safety: Improvement. I think Jenkins goes back to CB and Vaccaro takes the starting FS gig. Roman Harper will probably come in on running situations and goal line plays. They might use Bush or Quddus as the second safety in most passing situations. I think Harper will improve this year, just due to the nature of the strong safety in the 3-4.
You think Harper will improve because of the nature of the strong safety in the 3-4, but only have him playing in run situations?

San Fran and Seattle are not juggarnauts
San Fran is kind of a juggernaut. NFC championship then Super Bowl appearance last 2 years. And they seem to have upgraded their roster, which may have already been the most talented roster in football.
