re: Explain to me why the Saints defense will be better this year.

There are too many variables at this point, but I do think we'll see improvement in the secondary and on the line. The biggest question mark for me on the defense is our OLBs. This is the most important position of a 3-4 defense, and yet the most experienced guy that we have is Victor Butler @ a 1 year deal.

We have a lot of theoretical guys that could do well as OLBs in the 3-4. I think any Saints fan that isn't in the least bit concerned about the OLB position going into next season is drunk on the Kool-Aid.

Defensive Tackle: Improvement. Bunkley will likely excel in this position, and Hicks can be a good hybrid DT/DE. John Jenkins will probably be that eventual starting NT, but he'll need time to acclimate. They key to NT is try to eat up two blockers, a center and a guard on the interior. If one of them can do that we are in good shape.

Defensive End: Improvement. The scheme switch alone will mean that the pressure of getting to the QB will not be squarely on their shoulders, unlike in the Spags scheme. They switch to more containment defense. Cam Jordan will be the biggest benefactor of this change. Also look for Galette to be used in this role, he might do pretty well in it. He's great at moving laterally and will be effective at containing the run and applying some pressure to the QB.

Middle LB/ILB: No change, possible deficiency. Lofton is a standout player at MLB in the 4-3, but how he acclimates to the switch to ILB will be a major question mark. I think he will do pretty well, he's just a great player. The other major question is the second ILB. Will it be Chamberlain, Hawthorn, or Vilma?

Outside LB: Frighteningly vulnerable. Going into this off-season after CSP announced the switch to a 3-4, my biggest concern was who would run it and who would we get at OLB. We have a couple of players that fit the role of a 3-4, pass rushing OLB position, thanks to Gregg Williams desire to nab any player that could rip a QBs head off. But a lot of these OLB roster spots will be filled with un-vetted players at this position. I think the Victor Butler signing was great because it gave us some redundancy, but I thought for sure this draft would allow us to pick up our future franchise OLB. I understand that there was a gamble to made this offseason - either they draft the best available OLB and did their best later in the draft in the secondary, or they did what they did this year, gamble on the OLB. It's risky, but hey I trust them.

Cornerbacks: Improvement. We'll see the biggest improvement here. Keenan Lewis was a great signing, I think he and Greer will be an excellent tandem this year and possibly next year (depending on Greer). I think Malcolm Jenkins comes back as CB this year and will probably be the primary nickelback. Robinson will probably be backup for Greer/Lewis.

Safety: Improvement. I think Jenkins goes back to CB and Vaccaro takes the starting FS gig. Roman Harper will probably come in on running situations and goal line plays. They might use Bush or Quddus as the second safety in most passing situations. I think Harper will improve this year, just due to the nature of the strong safety in the 3-4.

re: Explain to me why the Saints defense will be better this year.

quote:

Please explain to me, in detail, how the moves that have occurred this off season will improve our defense

1.) A change in scheme itself will help for at least the first three to four games as there will be almost no film for opponents to study and prepare for the new defense. Hell, we are still arguing about who will play what position.

2.) Better personell. We have all known the players needed to be upgraded for years now. We have lost guys like Fujita, Sharper and Porter, but have failed to replace them. Last year our additions were Lofton and Bunckley. This year we added Jenkins, Vacarro, Lewis and Butler and got rid of Ellis. Personell upgrade is the biggest factor IMO.

3.) DC - I think Gregg Williams was about as good as it gets when it comes to DCs. That being said, he had shite to work with his last two years and did what he could which was blitz non stop since he couldn't do anything else. Spags sucked donkey balls last year. I was disappointed with everything he did besides the Eagles game. He was worthless. Although I'm not the biggest fan of Ryan, if he is an average DC, he's an upgrade IMO.

Please explain to me, in detail, how the moves that have occurred this off season will improve our defense and help us compete with San Fran, Seattle, and Green bay for home field.

This year we have a head coach.

San Fran and Seattle are not juggarnauts. They have good teams, but the year before you could have asked how teams were going to compete with the Giants and Detroit. The year before that you could have asked how teams were going to compete with the Vikings and Eagles. It's all cyclical. If you were to ask this same question two years ago, everyone would have laughed at you.

Atlanta made their run last year and blew their wad. Jackson will make their run game better, but Matt Ryan will fall back down to earth. Tampa will have an improved defense, but will be streaky on offense again and end up around .500. Panthers are gonna Panther. I think we have as good a shot as anyone, if not better of winning the division.

As for home field, that's somewhat out of our control. The NFC is top heavy, but there isn't a dominant division. Giants and Redskins will duke it out with the Eagles while the Cowboys will make media headlines and go .500. Seattle will be decent, but I don't think they end up as good as people are making them out to be. San Fran plays great defense and that will keep them in most games and the Cards and St. Louis will fight to win most games, but fall short. St. Louis will improve over the next few years. Fisher is a good coach and will make them a very strong (not stellar) team.
Seattle & San Fran have the best shot at getting the best record because they'll likely take both games from Arizona and St. Louis. Atlanta and NO are in a similar boat with Tampa and Carolina. Green Bay isn't markedly better than Minn, Detroit or Chicago. Same thing for every team in the NFC East.

IMO & IMHO

Sean being back means the offense will have the ball longer, therefore the defense will be more fresh. Better scheme for the players that we have. A big upgrade at DC. And we can't possibly be worse.

#2: new DC that allows a more instinctive style of aggressive defensive attack instead of a scheme happy Spags defense that relied too much on a pass rush that never happened.

In my opinion it was this change more than anything that will show significant improvement in the defense. Spags tried to make Harper a cover safety which is not his strong suit at all. He is an in the box tackling safety. This put more pressure on malcom Jenkins (which receives alot of criticism from on this board when actually the whole def sucked) and the corners. Spags was a terrible DC for us and didn't recognize this.

It is true, it can only get better and with putting freaks like martez Wilson, butler, and gallete on the field more you have to think it will improve.

It's not just that. With Sean and Drew, we're going to score early and often, plus have an improved run game. That will help our D a lot as a lot of teams will have to try to keep up with us. It's been our formula for success since SP and Drew arrived.

re: Explain to me why the Saints defense will be better this year.

quote:

What about the second part of the question?

The NFL does not work in a vacuum. By that I mean there is no exact formula that causes one team to definitively beat another team 10000 times out of 10000. For example, St. Louis was not a good team last year, but they tied San Francisco once and beat them the second time. The Giants failed to make the playoffs, yet stomped the 49ers.

The Seahawks appear to be the team to beat this season thanks in part to their defense and the rise of Russell Wilson. But how many times have we seen teams who "win" the off-season come up short and disappoint? Many times. In fact, the Saints have done that several times themselves.

The point I'm trying to make is that it doesn't matter how good a team looks on paper, how good they were last season, or even how good they were last week. In the NFL each game is different and though the players may be the same week to week, there is a human element to each game. This is a variable that will fluctuate for better or worse each week. It's impossible to predict.

This Saints team is not the same on as last year. There are plenty of familiar faces, but also a few new ones. There are young guys and old guys. There are new coaches and new schemes, and perhaps most importantly, new competition and new personalities. Position battles are sure to be had, as opposed to last season where everyone was "anointed". The best players will play.

There's no 100% guarantee that the defense will be better, but it's very likely to be. As for other teams, there's no guarantee that their defense will get better. The 49ers' may get worse, the Seahawks may get worse. There's no such thing as a sure thing in the NFL, it all just depends on the individuals on the field.

There's your smart answer now GTFO.

It'll be ok. We have competition and new blood at every position. We didn't sit on our hands, and we don't have to worry about another bounty scandal.
