Irrigation Pump Question

I've got about an acre garden I'm working right now. It's adjacent to a 3.5 acre pond. I'm growing a fair amount of heirloom tomatoes (13 varieties over 200 plants) for market.
It's very important that heirlooms get a consistent amount of water. They are pretty thin skinned and crack and split after dry periods followed by a deluge.
I'm thinking of running on my pond to irrigate the garden, but I have no experience with irrigation or pumps. I was wondering what I need to pick up pump wise. Ideally, I would like solar or electric just to reduce running costs, but I can go diesel or gas if needs be.
