Robert DeNiro's Performance in "The Fan"

I happened to catch this on TV the other day, and I thought he did a great job at progressing as a villain. As the movie went on, he seemed to get sicker and sicker in the head. I thought he did a hell of a job.

General thoughts on his performance?

I remember being kinda pumped about this one, and then renting it and thinking it kinda sucked. Thinking back, I don't remember many specifics from the movie. Weird.

Yeah it's kind of an old movie.

He plays a character named Gil Renard who's a big SF Giants fan, and knife salesman by day.

Bit by bit, his life starts falling apart. His knife business is going under, and eventually resulting in him leaving his son at the opening day ballgame to try and make a sale to salvage his business.

He ends up getting fired, ex wife and kid alienate him, and basically all he has is the Giants. He becomes obsessed with Wesley Snipes' character Bobby Rayburn who is a player on the Giants.

I mean he stalks the guy constantly, winds up killing one of the Giants teammates because the guy wouldn't sell Snipes' character his jersey number, and eventually kidnaps Snipes' son & threaten to kill him.

If you watch the character progress, it becomes clearer and clearer that he's a sicko.

Obviously not the best flick, but I'm talking just in terms of DeNiro's performance.

I got really excited when I saw the trailer as a 12-year old. The trailer was awesome. I was thinking "Wow, Barry Bonds look-a-like better hit a home run or this crazy guy is going to hurt his family".

Don't think I ever saw the movie, tho

Isn't he the umpire at the end.

Yes he was. He killed the home plate umpire during the rain delay & came back out in the 8th as the umpire.

The most eye-popping scene in that movie is when he tracks down "Coop" who he told his son over and over again was the best player he ever played with (implying he played college or minor league ball).

So he takes his jacket off and is decked out in Bobby Rayburn's complete game uniform and pitches to BobbAY's kid with Coop catching.

Coop helps the kid escape and DeNiro proceeds to beat his arse with a baseball bat, asking him why he did that.

Then it finally comes out when Coop says "that was little league when we were 11" and you're like "whoa" if he wasn't insane before, he sure is now.

I always forget that Benicio played Juan Primo. Like literally, I've watched it probably 3 times in a 12 year period and each time go "holy shit, I forgot Benicio Del Toro is in this." And IMHO DeNiro didn't really do anything extraordinary because he's basically played this same role in at least 5 or more movies.
