I'm with you on the .40 craze. Some outstanding marketing. People still believe they have something special with a .40. I believe the FBI was testing the newly developed 10mm and most of their agents couldn't handle it so they necked it down and told everybody they were getting .45 power with 9mm recoil... Ha!

You could almost throw the .30 Carbine into the discussion. There with are shite ton of surplus rifles on the market after WW2, and they weren't even deployed until 1942.

+1

But I also think since the advent of concealed carry and compact pocket guns, the 380 ACP, although invented by John Moses Browning a long time ago, has made quite the comeback.

300 Blackout. Easily. It was just SAAMI approved in 2011 and is already hugely successful. This is in large part because of all the wildcat rounds that led up to the 300BLK, but that is true for any round. Entire companies have been built based on the 300 Blackout and almost every AR manufacturers make a 300 AR, most being their flagship rifle.

Another good one. .380 was a buck a round for a bit.

Ammo is impossible to find. Is that because of demand, or manufacturers are too busy making the common stuff?

While it has surged in popularity, nothing to my knowledge ever got a sales spike like the .44mag did post Dirty Harry.

I always hear bigtime pistol shooters say the 380 used to be so pricey. But since I've been into shooting, it's become more popular and easier to find, although it's still not nearly as cheap as 9mm.

My argument says that I would say demand but I truly believe that is the case. I know that remington jumped in head first with materials and ammo. Additionally, any ammo manufacturer for say 06 is making 300 Blackout ammo too. It was hard to find before December and now it's impossible. Manufacturers are even claiming that they are switching from 308, 7.62, and 5.56 to start making 300 because they can charge a bit more and the others are catching up.

The biggest hold up is that there is no new 300 brass. It's all 5.56 that's been cut and sized. Hard to convince some manufacturers to add the extra step when 5.56 is so easy.

So in the end, I guess it's a bit of both but the round isn't dying, it's actually too successful for its own good.

You know God invented the 1911 on the 8th day right?

Well he shot Monday - Saturday after working all day. He set Sunday aside to break down and clean his Glock. After realizing that it was still in perfect working condition, he was bored for the rest of Sunday. On the 8th day he created a pistol that was not as reliable, much more finicky, and one that he had to reload a lot more to ensure that he never had another boring Sunday.
