With all the talk of potential trades etc. I thought it would be interesting to take a complete look at our draft history. Here's a detailed look of each player we've taken by round and pick, and how we got them under Sean Payton. There are some gems from trades that people criticize (such as getting Carl Nicks as a result of the Sed Ellis trade with the Patriots), and Bushrod as a result of the Stallworth deal to Philly. Some big misses too like giving up a 4th for Matt Tennant. But overall, the Saints manage to do pretty well in the middle rounds. I also noticed they trade a decent bit of their later round picks for veterans.

(If I missed anyone I'll fix)

Round 1:

This shows why I hate when we trade up.

Honestly I haven't been exteremly impressed with the drafts under Payton. Mid-late round gems and Udfa is where they've hit.

Chris ivory was also an Udfa

I've actually always agreed with this to a certain extent. And I would attribute at least a little the uncovered gems success to having #9 as their qb.

Here's the thing though, besides the gems, none of the pics were considered reaches or bad picks. Meachem and PRob weren't the most 'reach picks' we've had. But most like Jenkins, Jordan, Bush, Wilson, Hicks, Toon, Vaughn and Pittman were all taken close to where they were projected.

Here's why I don't want to trade back though. None of those guys listed were projected to be game changing type players on defense. We have a chance to get one of those type players this year.

What's interesting though is 2010 was the only year in which we did not have a pick that was the result of trading a player away. Additionally, we have used a lot of mid to later round picks to straight up trade for players: Shockey, Mare, Shanle, Vilma, Dave Thomas. We have also unloaded players at the right time, Stallworth, Brown. Makes you wonder, especially considering our cap situation, if any of the bigger contracts are still on the block under the radar like Strief (providing we trust others like Jones or Harris to fill the hole).

Man we've missed on so many DB's. I'm surprised to see how many we tried to nab, but few relatively panned out.

After six drafts, one thing is clear.

The Saints have the Best Offensive-Gem Evaluators in the league, & concurrently, the league's Worst Defensive Evaluators in their scouting department.

I don't concur, there's a ton of teams with a ton of defensive draft busts much more so than the likes of anyone not named sullivan.

We draft avg to poor on the def side. I like many of the FA we pick up for the Def though.

Its more stark of a divide because of the success on the off side of the ball.

All bad def picks? No. But it does seem we have more talented evaluators and scouts for the Off than our Def.

the statement was "league's worst defensive evaluators". I don't agree. So do you agree with me or him now? which is it goat? Which is it HUH?
