made into a movie?

That would be a strange adaptation. Not alot really happens in the book.

I'm thinking it would almost have to be done with a narrator expressing Holden's thought-for-the-situation... or maybe even in "House of Cards" style.

I don't know who should, but it will be Michael Cera if it happens in the next 5 years.

they could never make a movie version of the book...it would have to be a movie based off the book or something where holden is the main character, but it's a different story from catcher in the rye.

JD Salinger refused his whole life to allow a movie to be made. Hope it never happens.

I always pictured him as Ethan Hawke circa The Dead Poets Society.
Today, I'm afraid it would be Robert Pattinson.

Since Holden Caulfield sucks, it should be an actor that sucks. So, Shia Leboeuf.

I could go for that.

No. Way.
That would be terrible.

Good suggestion. It definitely has to be someone who you could hate. What about that guy who plays Joffrey in GOT if he can do an American accent?
(Really I think this movie shouldn't be made)

Agreed. But I reread it a few years ago and after seeing Into the Wild, I pictured Emile Hirsch, but he's probably too old now. But they've certainly tried to pass older actors than him as high schoolers.

Why? Who could hate Holden Caulfield?

I thought everyone thought he was a despicable, compulsive liar. Was I supposed to pity him, instead of disliking him?

Compulsive liar... sure. Despicable? NFW.
He had issues.

Yall are naming actors much older than I was thinking. Wasn't Caulfield like 15.

Hollywood typically has actors in their 20's playing teenagers.

Reasonable, well adjusted people. The guy was a turd.
