Estimated quarterly taxes?

Sign all the stuff at our CPA today and this is included in the paperwork. No one made mention of it while we were there. Evidently the first payment is due today? Is this mandatory and if so what would a penalty be if I don't go to the post office in downtown New Orleans

I am in the same boat; I'm just doubling up and paying 2 quarters when the next one is due. I didn't pay quarterly for 2012 and didn't have a penalty.

Turbotax spit those out for me too, but I just adjusted my witholdings to avoid penalties next year. But my income is primarily W2.

I didn't pay quarterly and my penalty was like $79
