I love Michael Shannon. I think he'll make a fantastic and menacing Zod.

Rumor has it that the plot will center around the familiar Zod vs Jor-el storyline. The twist is that by law on Krypton babies are 'engineered' instead of made the old-fashioned way. Kal-El (Superman) is the product of an old-fashioned birth, and, thus highly illegal in Kryptonian society.

But against his Kal's own will, so it maintains the bad guy persona of Zod.
Shades of the New Krypton storyline in the comics a few years ago.
