• Williams provided an interesting glimpse into the team’s mindset regarding the handling of Davis this season. The No. 1 overall pick in the draft finished the campaign averaging 28.8 minutes, a relatively low number given his production and status as a top pick. Williams: “I’ve tried to not match him up against guys I thought were stronger than him. We’ve been in situations this year where we felt like he was getting beat up. He was trying – and that’s what I loved about him. And managing his minutes. I thought if he played 35 or 40 minutes a game, I thought he would wear down. Turns out, he only played 28 minutes a game, which is where we wanted him to be. I just tried to stay away from certain matchups. I thought in the Laker game, he really got beat up.(Pau) Gasol and (Dwight) Howard really pounded him. He was sore after that game. You always try to protect your young guys, especially a guy like AD.”
quote:

• Williams acknowledged that the decision to not play Davis 35 to 40 minutes on a regular basis may have had a short-term impact on the team’s win column, but the coach believed it was the wise choice from a long-term standpoint: “That’s part of taking a hit to be better in the future. There are times when I could have played him more, and I know he would have helped us, but as the caretaker of the team, I have to make decisions that I think are going to be better for him and us going forward. I knew that going into the season, that I was going to have to do that. I talked to (San Antonio head coach Gregg Popovich) about that. I’ve watched him do it over the years (with the Spurs), to get ready for the playoffs. I did it to help us going into the future. It doesn’t always work out, but we tried to our best to spare a lot of our young guys those situations.”

• Williams, on Davis’ rookie season: “You look at his last five games, 18 (points) and 10 (rebounds), something like that, that’s what we wanted. We wanted to see him consistently get better from when we first got a hold of him until now. We wanted to see a guy that was more comfortable on the floor, obviously scoring the ball, rebounding the ball, defending. Look at his months, he got better every month. He hasn’t done well all the time, but strategically, this is what we wanted to see. It’s just unfortunate that he had an injury to end the season. He and Austin (Rivers) ended their seasons with an injury, which is what we wanted to avoid, but it happens.”

Despite all the early criticism, I really think they handled him the right way this year. He wouldn't have made it to the all star break had they come out giving him the type of minutes some were calling for, or playing him at center.

Despite taking a pounding this year, he got better and better as the season went on and was putting up all star level numbers the last 2 months.

I don't see anything wrong with him getting a taste of what it takes to be a good pf... beatings will increase his strength and bone strength... happy pau got him, he won't forget it. I also think having time to rehab that knee and eat a lot and do some upper body workouts would be good for him.

Clearly the kid from Louisville didn't take enough beatings, pre tourney. Bones just weren't strong enough yet

Basketball would increase bone density in legs enough... im talking about rib cage and upper body.. ever played basketball with a football player/boxer vs a similar weighted basketballl player? They r solid... ad wants to be somewhat like kd imo... need to toughen this kid up

Pretty sure that's milk, not basketball.

It's like you're trying to communicate with me. I know it!

Seriously though your bone density is what it is and gets that way from what you eat and drink. You're muscles get bigger by working them out, not taking a beating. Otherwise, every wimp beat up in school would be a big huge dude by the time he graduated.

If you say otherwise, I'd like a link of some sort to support your position.

Proper nutrition is required but not the cause It's well known one inceeases bone circumference with age after epiphyseal plates fuse...LINK /

I know from experiwnce thaxèt my ribcage used to be soft until I was getting hit regularly, its hard. Ive also increased my wrist bones density by squeezing them. Bodies adapt to their environment, should be gradual with ad but he needs to eventually get to that point of hanging with those guys. weights stress bones and muscles so they adapt.... u can search bone circumfrencce and bone density medical journals if u want to learn more... just my take.... chill

and ive seen a lot of fat kids that chug milk but I can almosy break their ribs when posting em up... when bone breaks it grows back thicker... same idea but with microfractures

Taking a pounding doesn't mean he's getting beat up my bullies. He's being shoved around, having to shove back harder. Working VERY hard to keep himself from being embarrassed. It's like an intense workout, and will absolutely improve his fitness and strength.

...higher risk of injury too

Absolutely! Fitness and strength. That's cardio and muscles from a workout. I've never heard of anyone increasing bone density by being shoved around or working out.

I honestly don't care about bone density...this isn't webMD...the point is that getting worked in basketball games could be good for Davis.
