How to handle resignation in this situation (UPDATED in OP)

I've accepted a new position and I am waiting on clearance of background check and all just to be certain there are no hiccups.
I'm traveling all week next week, Wednesday-Friday will be with my boss. We will be back from traveling Friday evening.
I'm thinking I should have all clearance from the new job sometime mid-week next week.
My plan is to ask my boss for a minute when we land at our hangar and hand him my resignation letter and let him know that I'm leaving and I'm giving two weeks notice.
Is this appropriate, or should I wait until Monday morning and talk to him in the office?
Now that I type it out, I'm leaning towards waiting until the Monday. . . . seems more professional.
--------------------------------------
Update:
Our schedule just changed to where we will all be returning on Thursday evening. We will all be in office on Friday. If I get all clearance from the new company, would Friday morning or afternoon be appropriate? Or still wait until Monday? shite. Is morning or afternoon better in general?
I've never done this, and hate the idea of quitting. I will just need to do it like I am ripping a bandaid off.

Yea. I agree. This makes much more sense. I knew the right answer, just needed to see it I guess.

Just make sure you make the trip the most productive, valuable business trip you can. Make your boss really appreciate you as a valuable employee.
Don't succumb to "Short Timer's Syndrome" so that when you give your boss your resignation letter on Monday he will think to himself, "Well, THAT'S a relief!"
You never know when you might need his reference for another new job.
Besides, he just might make you a counter offer you can't refuse.....

Absolutely. I will definitely continue to work as I always have. I do like my job. It's just one of those things where the new position is way better for me personally and professionally.

What do you do and ballpark the salary? I will go apply for your position on Monday.

You don't want it. You'd have to live in Mississippi.

Friday morning, that's the standard in my industry.

I'm ready to get this shite over.
I'd be pissed if one of my employees did that.
By waiting until Monday you will at least look like you wanted to give it more thought and it wasn't an easy decision, blah, blah, blah.
You may not believe this but you're not the first person to ever quit the company where you work. Remember Michael Corleone's words in The Godfather: "It's not personal. It's business." Just keep it all business when you tell your boss.
Besides, you may impress your boss so much on the business trip that he will tell you on Friday that he's making you president of the company.....

Is there any reason you would not get a clearance? If there is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON you would not get cleared to work for the new company, then I would at least consider being up-front about it and give the boss 2 weeks notice before the trip.
If you are concerned about the new company renegging on the offer or not honoring the offer for some reason other than a background check...then I guess you will have to burn some bridges.

You should tell him before the travel. That will give him an opportunity to bring a substitute who he wants to succeed you in the relationship with the people being visited.

And what happens if the final offer falls through as described in the OP?
