With brown shrimp season coming up, I want to gauge the opinion of whether it is worth the effort and money to get a 16 foot shrimp trawl for my very small boat. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

We pull a 16' trawl mostly to catch our own live shrimp. You can catch a good bit if you can get on the outside edge of a shallow bay on a falling tide. Bring help pulling in boards on a trawl alone is a bitch.

Used to do this with my dad growing up with a 16' net. We would generally do pretty well, but never really setting the world on fire. He would tell me stories of catching tons with a 16' net, but I can't remember ever catching more than 50-60#.

I'm thinking about giving it a whirl this year since I have all of the nets.

My old man used to do this but I was too young to remember how hard/easy it was.

If you are already down there, and can buy shrimp on the dock already clean and graded for about 3$ a pound, I don't see how it would be worth it, I say forget about it and use the time and effort into more fishing, but to each his own

Same here FIL tells stories about catching 1000#'s in one night with 16' trawl in a 16' flat boat and a 25hp motor. Then he's quick to say thats back when they had shrimp.

Be prepared to have someone close your hand around your toothbrush. But yes it's worth it. 10' test is easier to handle but doesn't open as wide. Be careful last year we started dragging for bait to fish at 5am, didn't quit till 9. Had shrimp bigger than Ron Jeremy's junk.

I have a 16' trawl and a 15' with a 50. I go in Lake Borgne on calm days and it is usually fine. Take a buddy. One of the few times I went alone I filled the net with clam shells and almost couldn't pull it in.
Some days you fill a couple boxes and it is definitely worth it; other times you wonder why you didn't just drink beer and boil some Rouse's shrimp.

Please explain the above. Seriously, not trolling. I have no idea what that means.

I'd take an ice chest full of shrimp over an ice chest full of trout all day. That said, I used to throw my cast net at night for live shrimp. I'd occasionally bring in a half dozen or so of those massive brown shrimp you're talking about (in Leeville about 100 yards from Lafourche). They really weren't great for trout until the afternoon cow bite, but big arse mangroves loved them.

I'm thinking he meant that your hand/forearm muscles would be mush after dragging the net in for a while. JMO

Point boat into the wind and stop motor. Pull boat to net.. Worst part is picking up boards

You don't want to get pushed back over it, though. It's easier to pull in slack, but it's also easier for shrimp to escape from a slack net.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. It can be a workout if your drags are too long or if you catch too much debris.

I used to know a guy growing up that would be piss drunk on the back of the boat and pull in both damn boards. Dude was like a damn ox. Now, he was also prone to overdoing it and breaking shite, but he came in handy at times. Don't expect a gorilla to apply light torque, though.

Acceptable only because you can never catch too much shrimp...
