My wife and I are having a hard time determining what floors to get. We have a small 1200sq ft house and have replaced flooring in the baths and kitchen and now need to remove/replace the carpet. She wants engineered hard wood flooring and I am leaning towards laminate. From what I gathered the cost for the engineered hard wood is almost triple of laminate. Anyone have thoughts or recommendations.

Just my opinions.... but the Eng Hardwood is worth the upgrade. Put it down in our last house (replaced carpet) and we were very happy with the quality of it. It just felt solid, didnt have that hollow sound when you walk on it.

Current house has laminate and we will be replacing it with end Harwood soon. By comparison, the laminate feels cheap. Sounds almost like walking on linoleum.

This is true, but it holds up real well to kids and dogs...

Yes. Engineered wood flooring looks better and lasts longer than laminate. It's also easier to put down than hardwood flooring and less maintenance. I just bought engineered flooring yesterday at $4.35 sq/ft. (material only).

We put this in our house about 4 years ago (Marigny Plank, Brazilian Walnut) and we love it. It's in a formal dining room, and since we don't spend much time in there, I can't speak for it's durability, but it's a Louisiana product (based in Metarie) and it was pretty reasonably priced.

If you plan on staying for a long time, I would get something nice.

If not, I would go look at Sam's laminate flooring.

As an old married guy, my recommendation is to make the wife happy. Whatever you decide to buy, you will save a ton of $$ by ordering your flooring online and having it shipped to your house.

If you go engineered, get one with a thicker top "wear layer." It will give you more options for refinishing/screening later on.

And put some thought into color. My current is a dark hickory - shows every spot of dirt and footprint. My previous was Kempas, which was a blend of red/blonde grain. Didn't show dirt at all.
