Is it possible to make Chris Ivory a happy camper this year?

Meaning he gets his touches aka production enough to where he'd want to stay here long term assuming we pay market value for his superior services? Or is he trade bait or a one and done with us cause ain't know way we can satisfy him while we're fondling ingram, giving PT touches and letting sproles do what they lil guy does.

If he wants to be a feature back, no

I don't think that's his expectations. Difference between feature and 4th string on the bench.

Good point. If he's just looking to get more involved in a game to game basis, I don't see why the coaching staff wouldn't do that. He's my favorite RB on the team. I just love his violent running style. The only thing I can figure is they haven't trusted him to stay healthy. He's been limited in the past mainly due to injury. And as much as people bash on Ingram, he did get better last year, probably due to the fact he saw Ivory about to take his job.

Do feature backs even exist nowadays? Outside of Adrian Peterson and Jamaal Charles?

Eta: Arian Foster...forgot him

As long as he keeps running and doesn't get injured, I don't care if he's happy or not.

Not being a locker room cancer would also be a plus.

Eff you and your edit

But seriously, I didn't necessarily mean 25-30 carries. Just being the main guy in the backfield. I'd say while all teams use multiple backs, most teams would have what would be considered a "feature" back that tends to get more snaps than the others.

Several feature backs in this league when healthy...
McCoy, MJD, Ray rice, Cj2k to name a few. All get like 80% or more of touches...

If you want to make him happy, it's easy. Give him 75 percent of the carries the first two weeks. Then he'll get hurt and miss the next 7 games and Ingram and Thomas will get all of the carries again.

I'm sure he'd rather go somewhere else just based on the type of offense we run and how many running backs we have.

That being said, he should be happier this year (if we involve him at all) because he didn't play until almost mid-season and only played a few weeks last year.

A better question would be does this Saints make any running back a "happy camper".

I'd be very surprised if Ivory is still on the roster Week 1, especially at his current tender. I think the first way to make Ivory a happy camper is a long term contract, which he probably won't get from us,

I think the question is, do we really want him long term? he's played like 12 games in the last two years. I think he is easily replaceable.

I hope so. Saw Chris at the Miami Heat/Hornets game a few weeks back and him being around the city at that time is a plus. This is probably his last chance to show if he can play without getting injured, in the most physically demanding position on the field.

I agree with the long term contract situation. But Ingram and Ivory cost the same at 2.02 mill. Unless you trust Cadet with taking his spot there's no point not to keep him based off the ability he's shown when healthy and not fumbling.

Just break down the #s by attempts and average from last year:

Player ATT: YPC: YDS:
Ingram, 156, 3.9, 602
Thomas, 105, 4.5, 473
Sproles, 48, 5.1, 244
C. Ivory, 40, 5.4, 217

Compare to 2011 (With Payton, even though ingram was a rookie)

Ingram: 122, 3.9, 474
Thomas: 110, 5.1, 562
Sproles: 87, 6.9, 603
C. Ivory: 79, 4.7, 374

One of these is not like the other, and its Ingram. He showed he was improving, but no one is going to dominate the carries overall, and he is the only one that has shown he can't come in at any point and gain a healthy amount of yards. He needs volume and we aren't going to give it to him.

My crystal ball isn't working so I can't see whether or not he will be happy, but if his production is at or near 2011, I would say he will be fine with that and getting 2 mill. I don't see why we wouldn't pay it. Maybe even split some more of Ingram's carries to boot(wishful thinking). Depth is so important at rb as we saw in Seattle playoff game, and Payton's game plan changes every matchup so pay the man.

Also important to note that Ivory did that in only 6 games in both 2011 and 2012. Ingram in 10 (2011) and 16 (2012). Raises Ivory's health concerns a bit, but he was also healthy and just not active for a substantial portion of last year.

I'm not ready to give up on Ingram yet. First year Sean Payton admitted to holding him back on purpose and he didn't call the plays this past year. Ingram is his guy and he stated he really wants the running game back. I wouldn't be shocked to see Ingram getting volume carries more this year to take the pressure off of Brees. Back to back 5000 yard seasons is great for the stat book but it really shows you need to feature the run game more. Think Ivory may just be trade bait. Violent runners are fun to watch but they fade quickly and stay injured. I'm looking at you Marshawn Lynch injury bug coming

I just think that $2 mil is better used at another position than a 4th RB. I don't think it would be Cadet picking up his carries, I think it will be Ingram/PT (mostly Ingram) taking more carries.

I love Ivory's running style, but it;'s impossible to avoid injuries and fumbles (even though he hasn't fumbled in a game in 2 years) with that type of running style. If he could stay consistently healthy, then I would be all about making him our #1 back.

quote:

Just break down the #s by attempts and average from last year:

I agree that Ivory is more productive than Ingram when given the ball, but the coaching staff has shown over the last couple of years that they just trust Ingram and PT more than him. And if that's the case, like I said above, there's no point of paying $2 mil to a 4th RB.

I'd like to see our give someone a chance to be a lead back and let them establish a rhythm in a game (whether it be Ingram or PT), rather then letting them take 2 carries, take them out, give someone else 2 carries, take them out and put another one in.
