I'm going to pick up a soccer game in the next few days. I'm wondering if FIFA 13 is worth the price or if it's just another typical EA rehash. Given EA's reputation, it's always nice to get some opinions beforehand.

ETA: Same question for the new Tiger Woods as well. I had 12, is 13 better?

I'd get FIFA 13 IMO ... it's about the only thing I play now.

Also what you used to pay for the live updates to rosters is now free in 13. I also like the manager mode more this time as well.

The thing that killed it for me last year was that the MyPlayer mode was so bad. Why the hell would you give the player an option to immediately come in as a 99 rated player? Obviously that's not the reason I'm getting it now. I've gotten more into the actual gameplay of sports games instead of just MyPlayer modes and FIFA seems to be one of the more enjoyable games in that aspect.

But it's MyPlayer mode is awful, tbh. But soccer is such a team sport anyway that I don't think they could make a very good MyPlayer mode out of the sport. Basketball is the ideal sport for that mode, and football can pull it off, but it's insanely boring in soccer.

If you are completely anti-EA, there is PES2013. The only downside with it is how limited the number of licenses it owns (aka teams). I haven't played FIFA, but PES has a pretty good team manager mode

The new FIFA's first touch system is lame. Just my opinion but I don't care for it.

The first touch system is just overdone this year. On default settings the user controlled team has HORRIBLE touch on the most simple passes, but just adjust the slider for user first touch control and it fixes that. The system needs to be refined for sure though.

FIFA 13 is super fast arcade bullshite. I would love to punch that nerd Rutter for putting out this shite. Pes is ok but has its flaws also. Definitely more realistic than fifa if you care. 10 mins and a usb stick you will have all the teams you need in pes. Fifa 12 was really good but if you play online the teams aren't updated anymore. If you only play offline Fifa 13 can be made playable by tweaking the gamespeed and sliders.

I've never had many problems with the first touch.

I only played ultimate team, so I don't know how that differs.

I would buy fifa just for the ultimate team. It is by far the greatest thing in all sports games

How does it differ from the NBA/NFL versions?

You have a far bigger pool of players, positions, formations, etc...

I don't know why you seem to think I was saying FIFA 13 is a great game. I stopped playing it a long time ago because of all the bugs and freezes. I was just commenting on the issue of first touch control so take it easy bro.

But arent we really pointing out the core problem with all of EAs sports games? That really they haven't made the best sports game by making a great sports game, but by monopolizing licenses and stifling competition. That the biggest and best difference between this year's game and last year's game is the up to date roster, and we don't notice any other changes unless it really messes up the game

I only like to play online. It is shite. So it won't be played

My roommates and I play just about daily, I'll give my thoughts on it:

-New roster updates just about weekly is awesome
-First touch system could be cool, it only works when you have players like Ronaldo or Messi. It's infuriating when you make a perfect pass only to have a player have a horrible touch that goes all the way to the goalie
-Better long shot ability than 12, still not quite the ability to make it long range like in 11
-Finesse shot is just absolutely awful, it might as well be a chip shot now with how slow it moves and how little it curves. I never use the finesse shot anymore

Overall I'd go for it, new one won't be out for another 6 months or so.

Yes. I get sick of playing beautiful through balls only to have Rooney take a touch a high schooler would be embarrassed of.

In typical EA style, the game is a big steaming pile of horse shite. The first touch system is abysmal. The computer AI passing is atrocious. The amount of glitch goals are ridiculous. If you enjoy watching your CB be in perfect position to easily win a header over a striker 15 inches shorter than him, only to give up an easy header goal, then this game is for you.

But.....its all we have for a soccer game. So you, like me and the rest of the powerless masses, are forced to buy it.

Went and bought 12 today. I've never been big into soccer games so I just need something to get used to the controls. What are some good strategies to set up scoring chances? I never seem to have any luck with crosses.

Overhead through balls work 99.99999% of the time. Part of the genius that is EA.

Overhead through balls
How do you do that? The only through balls I can get off stay on the ground. Is there like a second button you have to push?

Also, how do you do a spin move with the ball? I know how to do certain dribble moves, but the spin move isn't the same as in NBA 2k13. (You'd think it would be.)
