Looks like it will finally come to pass. After bickering and whining by alderman tom tunney and roof tops bitching about having their view into the ball park they only contribute 17% of profits for for free baseball, the cubs will finally get to pretty up the old girl.

LINK /

Not really surprising since it's been rumored for abut 4 days now that a deal would get done, but good to see it happening.

No indication where all the rats are going to move after the bowels of wrigley are gutted.

They really are. I understand they have an 'agreement' since they never call it a contract that the cubs would not obstruct the 'uninterupted sweep of the stadium and bleachers' but jesus...it's about time those go the way of the typewriter. Cubs need revenue to improve the stadium (since ricketts is going to pay for himself and not charge the city a dime, oh hiya marlins) and these guys want to litigate based on fuzzy language at best.

Looking at the drawings and plans I think this is a good deal for the team and the neighborhood and the ricketts, and the rooftopers have been making millions of dollars hand over fist for years. the good of the many outweigh the good of the few, in my opinion.

it doesn't look like it will completely turn the Wrigley we know and love upside down.

drawn up plans

I realize this link doesn't have the video board, but the cubs were asking for a video board that they would put in left field behind the bleachers that would only obstruct roof top views in a limited amount...which comapred to some of the seats in the stadium could still be a much better view.

Rooftop club owners SHOULD bitch. They still have 11 years left on a deal they signed with the team that requires the Cubs to compensate them if the views are obstructed.

Too bad so sad if the Cubs think 17% of the club profits isn't enough. They signed the deal.

I do appreciate that the Ricketts family seems to be funding all of the renovations on their own dime though.

I agree. I understand some folks saying a video board (assuming that's part of the deal announced)is a bad idea. But you have to be practical. you can put up one sign and get the ad revenue from that or you can have a video board with rotating ads. Now what i don't wnat them to do is be like atlanta and pump sound through it all the time and try to tell me when to cheer becuase i can't figure that out on my own. And no kiss cams please (insert your best boys town joke here)

Yep.

Especially when you consider the player improvements. Bigger dugouts, beautiful clubhouse, and batting cages. I don't wnat to pretend like i've been down there but whenever a player gets honest they always say they love playing in wrigley, but hate the player facilities, some have even compared it to double a level player facilities. So with the goal of trying to attract free agents it's a must to upgradet those.

Also if the cubs get what they want then having more night games will be good too.

Eh they always point to an agreement not a contract and some really non-descript language, but lets assume there is something iron clad and the cubs are breaking the deal. If the cubs breach and it's still a beneficial breach (make more money even after paying them off) then so be it. frick those guys, i'm a fan of the cubs, not some guys siphoning money off a product they don't create.

I don't really have a problem with a video board above one of the outfield fences, but it doesn't have to be some giant thing like the astros have. it can just be a simple screen, all the other information needed is on the beautiful hand-changed scoreboard in center field. a small board for replays and a couple of ads isn't going to make me mad, personally.

the majesty in Wrigley is the history and the wonder, the whole package. a few nods to this century isn't so terrible. now, tear it down and i'm singing a different tune, ha.

as i understand it they are limited by size of the board and the video board will be fairly small compared to other major league teams.

I'm surprised the Cubs put themselves in this position with the rooftop owners to begin with. They should've just told them they can hold parties all they want, but if they start trying to profit off Cubs baseball games, they'll sue them. The pennies the Cubs make from the rooftop agreement isn't worth the headache it has become.

Tribune company...same people that thought jim hendry was worth retaining year after year. I also think it was somehow tied in with getting the landmark status that i'm sure helps them out on taxes. Not sure though..just guessing.

That stadium is in much need of this. I toured it about 5 years ago. I was surprised how the stadium was a complete dump. My high school locker room was nicer than theirs. Press box area was crappy looking too. Very under whelming and completely run down.

While renovations are much needed, I hope they don't change it too much. It's a special place for baseball

I fricking hate this.

And the godforsaken redneck country music that they blast in my ears in between innings. Just awful.

Completely agree.

And based on the illustrations that new upper concourse area looks beautiful. I think they found the right mix here: Preserve the history, upgrade what looks dumped on.

Some chicago reporters now saying they're not hearing a deal will be announced today.

Can't imagine Mayor Emanuel will let this one fall apart this close. He's got a lot to game by saying he got a team to dedicate that much money/jobs to a city without spending a dime.

I wish LSU would have done a big renovation similar to this rather than build the new stadium. I like the new park, but it doesn't have the same feel. When I went to Wrigley for the first time last year it had that old Alex box feel to it and was really cool.
