Bear in mind, this would be from 1963 to present.

DeNiro
Pacino
Hackman
DD Lewis
Nicholson

I think you can place Eastwood somewhere in the next five.

I love Clint, but he's definitely not a great actor unless he's happy and sunny all the time and the grumpy curmudgeoness is an act, but I doubt it.

How can you type this after seeing the brilliant Every Which Way But Loose & Any Which Way You Can.

Shame on you. His acting is beyond your understanding.

And I think he has a better case for director - an underrated one at that, than actor - like many lead actors of his generation, he generally got paid to be himself - when he was younger he was cast because the filmmakers saw him in the part.

As a director, one can argue he is a top-tier director, both critically and commercially, and may be the most underrated director of the last 40 years.

No. That's actually kind of laughable.

Movie Star? Most likely, but even that could be argued.

Guys I can consider in the same league as Clint, purely as an actor over the past 50 years:

George Clooney

Dustin Hoffman

Philip Seymour-Hoffman (2 Hoffmans, go figure?)

Kevin Spacey

Anthony Hopkins

Tom Hanks

Morgan Freeman

Denzel Washington

Paul Newman

Ed Norton

I hesitate to put Depp, DiCaprio or Pitt in this because I have, at various times, completely dismissed them as actors.

I'm not sure Brando or Jimmy Stewart would fit the bill here, because much of their outstanding work was prior to 1963 (Brando much more of a contemporary with Eastwood, though, while Stewart was of the previous generation).

Certainly I can see Clint getting in the top 15 or 20, though, which is impressive when you consider his longevity, his influence, overall body of work, his outside interests and his directing credentials - certainly there are very, very few double/triple threats as impressive as Clint in all of Hollywood history.

Mel Brooks, maybe? Sydney Pollack? I don't know if either of those guys compares to Clint as a dual-threat... at all.

Clint Eastwood in an icon more than actor or director.

I don't think he's the best at being an actor or director but he is probably my favorite at both.

Yeah and I (as well as others) can poo-poo him as an actor all we want, but the fact remains - Bladerunner is my favorite film. However, fighting for second place include a handful of films, including Pulp Fiction and The Outlaw Josey Wales - as much as I love western films, this one stands out above the rest - directed by and starring everybody's favorite grumpy uncle.

Johnny depp before PotC
Christian Bale - AP alone puts him here, but like depp has become mainstream
DDL - even though I hear Lincoln is a boring disaster
Dicaprio - some will dispute this but he's jack Nicholson only he doesn't just play himself in every role
Marlon Brando
Deniro

That's just off the top of my head and Eastwood isn't close

All of these are better actors than Clint by a significant margin.

And the only reason Norton is off the list is because Clint has been in approximately 187 more films than Norton. Norton's 4 best performances are probably better than anything Clint did. Denzel too.

Generally speaking, he plays the same character in every movie he's in. That said, I like him as an actor and enjoy his movies. But imho, there's no way he's in the top 10 just based on acting ability.
