I've always just stumbled upon a big one every now and then and have never really targeted them per say. Almost every time I head south, there is a big boat anchored up in Whiskey Pass and I assume that's what they're doing. I'm not gonna sit around all day chasing bull reds, but would like to try it out a couple times and see how it goes. Anyone have some advice on location, techniques, baits, etc?

Preciate ya

Fish the shelf not the deep water, like any other fish look for subtleties in the sand between channel and bank. This is after you find the bait. Don't spend a lot of time if you don't get bit, 20 yd move can be the zero to hero difference.

Great, thanks. Do y'all know if that's what is always going on in the pass? It's usually a big ol center console charter boat with several people.

It's a good fall back when other things are slow. Good time for it too, free line a live mullet way back and wait on a jack. Bastards are a kick in the arse to catch.

They love eels too. Chop them in about 4 to 7 inch pieces.

Never caught a red with cracked crab.
The other crabs would eat them first.

Also, in MS. it's illegal to use undersize crab for bait.

Fish any pass with cracked crab and you will catch them. I usually cuss when I hook up with one bc I never fish for them. They will destroy a topwater bait.

I saw a school a few miles out in the Gulf one day that was huge. The water looked bronze. Acres of bull reds. All you had to do was throw a gold hook and hold on.

The best that I have seen is live crabs. Break the claws off and hook them where the little flipper meets the shell. This keeps all of the catfish and other crabs off of your bait. I've always fished for them (not very often) off of Beach Point in Cat Island Pass (west of West Timbalier) in about 12 ft of water.

That exactly what is going on. If the trout are slow, the bull reds and drum are a trip saver.

In that case, leave the shells on them and cut the tips off the crabs to let the juices flow.

At this time of year, you do not need to go past the coast. Fish where any of the main deep bayous meet the Gulf. (Bayou Dularge, Grand Calliou Bayou, Oyster Bayou) Make sure you have enough weight on your line and throw cracked crab and have some fun. I am like top water and try to avoid them, but when I bring someone who has never caught one it is a huge rush. Good Luck.

As stated use cracked crab / cut mullet. I would idle into the pass until it starts to shallow up near the breakers say to 5-6' then head back out to deeper water and fish the drop off. I have done well on the last island side casting back towards the gulf. With cut mullet you will most definitely catch a few sharks if the reds aren't thick. I had one trip where we literally got tired of catching reds all were in the 20-25 lb range. Oh and for tackle i use an ambassador 7000 with a steel leader and large egg sinker. Cast out, set clicker, drink beer and wait for it to start screaming.

I do this also. People who don't fish a lot just want to catch something big that fights. They do hate it when I want to release them though....i hate cleaning them

And eating them. I usually don't keep a red over 27 inches. Too much blood. Perfect size is barely legal IMO.

Definitely. I have burned up too many knives on bull reds also.

Take the top half of a crab off and hook it on one of the points. Carolina Rig. Put it on the bottom while anchored and wait. Won't be to long. I've always done with a pretty big crab.
