Caught most of the first season of this show over the weekend.
I couldn't stop thinking that while Buffy is easily Joss Whedon most successful project not named the avengers, that Firefly is going to be the more well thought of show as time goes on.
The dialogue and jokes in Buffy are just as well written as those in Firefly, but the actors are horrible.
The actor who played Xander destroyed great lines every episode.
Am I in the minority thinking that outside 1 or 2 performances the Buffy cast were horrible actors?

You can't judge Buffy based off the 1st season

I don't think it can touch what firefly could've been though

Even Buffy's staunchest defenders will admit that Season 1 is uneven at best. The series' reputation mainly lies for late S2 to S5.
And Xander is the damsel in distress, and the star of the single best episode in Buffydom, The Zeppo.

he gets better. Some of his one liners in later seasons are fantastic.

you gotta keep going. Anya is my favorite character and i don't think she is made permanent until season 3. It is one of my favorie series of all time. season 4 kinda drags and it gets a lot darker after that. Stick with it.

Season 1 doesn't have Anya, Faith, or Spike. The series has a long way to develop.

great ep.
another of my fav eps is "Tabla Russa" (sp) - the one where they lose their memory from willow's spell.

The first season was the absolute worst. Full of cliches and missed cues. The series was finding its legs. Half of Season 2 was also lacking (the Mummy episode!?!?!). Season 2 picks up hardcore and finishes extremely strong.
In terms of it versus Firefly, I think you are talking about different types of shows. Buffy is fantasy so it can get away with a lot more. Firefly is well rooted in the sci-fi realm so naturally it will be given more credit because it basically shows how we change as a society as we go out into space.
I feel like its apples and oranges.

I love Firefly but lets not pretend there wasn't some shite acting on that show.
The dude who plays Simon is friggin terrible most of the time.
My girlfriend has had me watching Buffy the last few months as a trade for me getting her to watch Battlestar.
I really surprised at how much I liked it.
also, I actually dug the mummy episode. It was a nice change of pace from vampires IMO. The most recent one I saw was with the giant snake man at the frat.
made me do a double take when I realized the first girl they kidnap is Jordana Spiro from My Boys.

Not gonna lie. Probably the worst episode of the entire series aside from the one in which Buffy gets addicted to beer. It gets a lot better from where you are.

Nah it's perfectly forgettable but it's about on average with most episodes until the middle of Season 2.

Just a great character. I am doing the run through the show for the first time this year. She is always gold.
Starting Season 5 soon.

Yeah dude definitely keep going.
I love Firefly, but Buffy is better simply based on volume alone.
Seasons late 2 through 5 are some of the best stuff on TV IMO. Firefly only had half a season to develop. It probably would have been as good if given 5 seasons, especially based on the awesomeness of Serenity, but that's like saying The Hobbit is better than the LOTR trilogy.
Just so much more rich mythology in the Buffy-verse than what Whedon was able to develop for Firefly.
I didn't start watching Buffy until the switch to UPN. Watching all those seasons in like a month or two to catch up was my favorite marathon experience until I read all five books of ASOIAF over five months.
Wish I could go back and watch them again

I thought the snake monster was kinda cool but they didn't do anything with him.
I was hoping he would at least eat one of the frat guys or something.
He didn't even really fight anyone.
