Wasn't thinking of crossfire with them, just a single card which would roughly = two 970's in a single card for about the same price. If there is a price drop coming I would sli 980's but I don't see that happening soon.

They 390x will have 7 gigs right? Any early indication on the price?

It's a dual GPU card, but the way it functions is no different from crossfire. It will be configured as crossfire in catalyst. The Hawaiis just didn't do as well in crossfire as Tahiti in terms of scaling, smoothness, and stability. And if you have a second monitor, you'll want to set those cards on fire (but that's a different story and irrelevant if you only have one monitor).

You probably knew this already, but if that "8GB" 295x2 really only has 8GB worth of chips on the entire card, then it doesn't really have 8GB of vram either. It still works like crossfire and 4GB will mirror the other 4GB.

The 390X will have 4GBs as well, but it's stacked HBM (high bandwidth memory). It will be limited to 4GB (as in, no AIBs making 8GB versions) until Hynix can produce higher density chips (right now the HBM cubes are limited to 1GB each and the 390x's memory bus would only be to handle 4 cubes total). So what would you suggest for the best performance with ~$800 budget, I have a single 7950 I can work with until I get new cards. I don't see myself dropping $1100 for two 980's, but what about a single one, I assume I will lose some from my dual 970's but I it's also $150 cheaper and leaves me open to add a 2nd one when the prices drop (if they do) or are new cards that much better and worth the wait and won't cost me $1000

The 390X I imagine wouldn't be more than $600, probably less. It will outperform the 980 and won't be bottlenecked by memory bandwidth. I'd wait for a single 390X at this point, if you can get by on the 7950 for a while (maybe another month or two).

It will suck after using this set up, but I can live with it but I may need to drop back to 1080 and slum it, but I will wait for it, hell by then I may get froggy and buy two....

What games were showing clear vram capacity bottlenecks in the 970s?

I can't say technically because I don't monitor this stuff or have the knowledge like you do, I did notice some performance issues like quick freezes when trying to turn quickly in Dying Light and DA:I, but honestly I don't know if that was GPU related or not.

The 970 is not that bad of a card, honestly I saw this as an opportunity to avoid any potential issues with it in the future and a chance to upgrade. It's not often you can use a card for three months and get full price back just when next gen stuff is coming out and two free games.

Newegg fricked me on a RMA MB a couple of years ago so I don't feel bad for them at all.

Sorry to go OT but I know some of you like photography. Just ordered this bad boy and will have it in my hands on Monday. Can't wait to shoot through it.

I don't know what that is, other than a big lens.

It's cool to have a hobby but I just lol at all the people that pick up a camera and become professionals overnight. The OT is full of those.

Bought a Logitech G602 today and I hate it so far. Uncomfortable as hell.

Can't wait until the cable to fix my G9X gets here.

My wife has several friends who suddenly became photographers. The selective coloring is out of control.

I wonder how it compares to a G502. I bought one of those to replace my G9X and I like it. If you aren't able to fix your G9X I'll sell you mine. What's wrong with it?

Wire is messed up where it connects to the mouse. Ordered one off of eBay today.

I'll buy yours anyway to use as a backup if you like. They quit making them and they are $200+ new for what's left in stock.

Need some help. My brother just got an Nvidia GTX 970, which I am assuming is an upgrade from his previous GPU.

He currently has an i7 930 @ 2.8 GHz on an X58 motherboard. Is there going to be any sort of bottle-necking when upgrading to the new card?

Should he upgrade his CPU and if so, can he keep his existing mobo?

Thanks!

LSUToo will know more about that chip than me but it's an older chip and the performance of it is below the cheaper AMD chips even so I think it would have some bottleneck. That being said, depending on what sort of games he plays and if he is just gaming at 1080p, then I doubt he notices too much of a difference. Maybe not enough to justify upgrading just yet.

Don't think so. I don't know of any newer chips that fit the 1366 socket.

Entirely depends on the games he plays and how much they rely on CPU. CPU-hungry single-threaded games are likely to present a problem. Easiest way to know is to check your GPU usage in game. If his frame rate is under 60 (or is otherwise at its highest possible) but the game isn't using above 90% GPU, he probably has a bottleneck. The higher the resolution, the less likely there will be a bottleneck because it puts more load on the GPU -- doesn't necessarily imply a higher frame rate though. For example, if you play at 1080p and can only get 50 fps but your GPU is sitting at 60% usage, your CPU is probably bottlenecking. But if you move up to 1440P, you may still get 50 fps but your GPU could be at 80% usage (just pulling numbers out of my arse), and then at 4K you may be struggling to maintain 30fps, but your GPU usage is at 95-99%, meaning the CPU is not the problem in that particular scenario -- that is, until you upgrade your GPU again.

Yeah, it's one of our missing that is also into photography.

That's a Tamron 150-600 zoom lens. It makes stuff far away appear to be very close.

Thanks both of you for answering. What is the best way to check GPS usage during game?

ETA: also what normally makes a game more CPU hungry?
