Was watching some of Hickok's videos and ran across this one.

Like myself, there seems to be a lot of new 1911 owners on this board. This video might be useful if its your first time breaking down and cleaning.

Glad to see even an ol' timer have a little trouble popping the slide lock in. Now I don't feel so bad.

As far as cleaning, pretty much the same procedure applies on all semi-auto handguns.

I can break one down in about 3 seconds. I do love some Hickok though.

They make an "idiot scratch" tool to prevent you from scratching your frame too. I've gotten to the point where I don't need the tool (and my plunger spring isn't hard) but I may order one down the road.

Yes, I have been very careful to not make the idiot scratch when breaking mine down. A little unnerving though on a new gun that is tight.

My Sig manual explained all the little tricks that Hickok brought up... the right way to turn the barrel bushing, holding the gun hammer down on the table, leaving the link down.

I pull the hammer back and put the safety on. The safety notch holds the slide in place.

I would hate to put a scratch on a new Nighthawk or something. I would probably cry.

This is a tricky step in some. Luckily my link has a little resistance and doesn't sway much when I slowly put the slide back on.

That looks like a little piece of Mylar maybe?
I think I can handcraft one of those for myself.
I have plenty of mylar lying around at work.

I've seen them, the ones I've seen are like a guitar pick

I think those up there are actually the same material as a pick. I think they're a thin polycarbonate but any material that is scratch-resistant should do.

Man, they make guitar picks out of everything under the sun these days. (I play guitar...nylon is my favorite)

Probably Celluloid though now that you mention it.

If you check my sig pic, I'm a musician too. But I don't play bass with a pick because I'm a man and I have testicles. Any bassist who plays exclusively with a pick goes down a couple of notches in my book. Irritates the shite out of me.

Something like that.

I like the nylon for fast strumming. But for songs with more picking, Tortex are my favorite.

<----- Broken guitar strings in my AVI...
Rompus is a nickname I picked up years ago, has nothing to do with how I got the nickname, but rompus means "broken" in French.

Yep. My son wanted to start playing the bass a couple of years ago. I told him the same thing. Learn with your fingers. He has kinda dropped the bass in favor of the guitar these days. Wish he would have stuck with the bass though. Not many good bassists around anymore.

Lighten up Lemmy!

BTW, saw your dad today. I told him to come back at night so that he could admire your work.

I don't know if you're too old for Tigerland but if you frequent on weekends, you may or may not catch me in action. I sorta dabble.

That's what SHE said, right? Had to do it...

Anyway, I agree. Playing with a pick limits your ability to mute strings when you transition to others. When playing bass this is important unless you're playing 5ths on higher strings.

You should've told him about your new toy. It's too beautiful to not show off.
