Alternative Team Building

Rob Mahoney at SI with a long look at Denver and their title chances. Particularly relevant as the Hornets try to build around Davis with cap space in a small market and a high draft pick in a shitty lottery.

quote:

First and foremost is the lack of a superstar player, much less the two or three stars traditionally considered requisite for contention

quote:

Yet most of what a superstar provides for a contender can be boiled down to an economy of function. It’s convenient to have a vast collection of those necessary skills and attributes distilled into one player, but a superstar is only as necessary as those underlying qualities afforded. Typically, chief among those traits is the capacity to create efficient offense

He goes on to break down the system the Nuggets use and the way they have talent that fits that system. Particularly how great they are in clutch situations.

Also a nice blurb about 2 other teams without traditional superstars.
quote:

Also implicated in the discussion of whether NBA teams need superstars are the Pacers and Grizzlies, two of the best examples of how sound a lineup can be without a single transcendent talent. Both franchises have gone about constructing more balanced lineups as a means of accounting for the lack of a dominant player, but as a result Memphis and Indiana boast the two most effective high-usage lineups this season

They describe Denver like a soccer team in ways.
Get it close as possible, dribble hand offs, off ball cuts and shots from close. Not to mention a frantic pace.
Oh yeah and half their home games are at altitude.

I'll take their success no question.

I love Denver's team...a "big 3" is not necessary.

...hope they make some noise in the playoffs

re: Alternative Team Building

There were a few articles like this back in '04 when the Pistons won their title without a true superstar and whether Joe Dumars formed a new mold for success. No one else really pulled that off, but the Pistons had a nice five year run or so.

Chicago started massing talent like that, then they found their "superstar".

The Pacers are kind of like that too. But they have a dominant big man in an NBA that lacks dominant big men.

The "superstar" label is so dumb. All of those teams have players whose numbers rival the best players at their position. Whether they are considered superstars or not means little when the game is being played.

Either way, the Nuggets have loads of talent. They basically built their team by turning Melo into 5 contributing players.

True, but Dolan seems about due to overpay for somebody... get to work, Dell.

Where do they play the other half of their home games?

The label is dumb, but more because there are only a handful of true franchise players that bring the all around skills Mahoney is talking about and can anchor any team. Everyone else needs help and context.

The thing that worries me is that I'm still not sure, after three years, what Monty/Dell philosophically believe is the best way to build a team.
