Official Draft Countdown Talk -30 Days

This is one of the more intriguing draft years in recent memory all things considered.

No 2nd round pick
Switching to 34 defensively
Bushrod walks
Lewis and Watson signed

I have a feeling that were done with FA for now and it's time to look forward to the draft. The possibilities just seem endless on what could actually happen come draft day. But I think there's one thing we can all agree on: We Trust Payton. Whether its drafting that defensive playmaker or even trading back to get more bang for our buck, I can't wait to see what happens.

Here's to continued debate and debauchery until that fateful 25th day in April

Definitely the most interested I've ever been in a draft.

I don't think we're done in FA though

I don't really know how much I trust their first round picks. Haven't exactly picked any pro bowlers or difference makers. Especially defensively.

Unless jones or Mingo falls to 15, I'd just as soon trade down. As long as an offensive lineman isn't drafted.

nope. We'll ink a OT and OLB before its over, before the draft id say. then all options are open.

And there's strong arguments that one of two guards/centers could be available and be argued that they are the BPA.

It's years like this I wish we had a 2nd so grabbing someone like Barrett Jones in the 2nd or 3rd wouldn't feel like a waste if a pick. I feel like we're starting to feel o-line talent drain and we need to keep plugging holes when guys like Brown or eventually Strief keep failing to meet expectations

What would be the reaction if we traded 15 and next year's 1st to grab a Lane Johnson or the OLB that we want?

I think Jordan has proved himself worthy of a 1st round pick. His niche is being a run stopping end, but he's transformed into an all around good end. He has a very bright future, the 3-4 is a more natural fit for him IMO.

Solid additions have been added via free agency the last 2 off seasons as well. (Lewis, Lofton, Hawthorne*, Nna-...)

Who they draft could go numerous ways, and there isn't much that would surprise me. OT, OLB, CB, S... But, if the Saints do anymore in FA we'll have a better idea as to what they'll pick.

We need to stop giving away picks, that would be my reaction

When's the last time we had all of our 7 original picks to work with in a draft?

I'm all about grabbing a good player this year. That being said, I'm not sure there is a "can't miss" guy worth making that trade for. There's no Von Miller, Mario Williams or Patrick Peterson.

I think we can get a good value at 15. We just have to hope someone wants to grab Geno Smith. That should make one of the OT or OLBers fall to us.

As for this offseason, it's different. It feels like a coaching change year. Big name free agents (Nnamdi), decent drafting prospects at our spot. But we aren't exactly starting all over from scratch. Exciting times.

WHO DAT!!!

2005? I think?

Quick question regarding compensatory draft picks for next year. If we don't sign a LT, in theory, we should receive one for bushrod right?

Oh, I totally agree. He was at what, 24? Solid player so far and getting better. I was just saying they don't have a proven track record of 'hitting homeruns' in the first.

Bush - solid
Ellis -
Jenkins - solid
Robinson - show potential but has regressed. I think will make a solid nickel with Gree and Lewis on the outside
Ingram - getting better but still a bad move to jump back in to first to get him
Meachem - solid #2 while he was here but still nothign special
Jordan - shows great potential and will probably end up being the best first round pick this staff has made so far. I agree 3-4 end looks to be just what he needs

Also agree. UDFA, mid-late round picks, and nice free agent moves have made this team what it is. Not first round picks

Then trade down. If you can't trade down, take the second BPA.

We don't need a guard. We don't need a center. And we don't need an "elite" tackle. It would be a nice to have IMO. Brees has shown he is elite with marginal talent at LT. Our entire line has been 3rd round and later, save Grubbs who we didn't draft.

There's no reason for this staff to ever use a first round pick on an offensive lineman until they show they can't develop the ones they have/draft. Maybe with Kromer gone that changes, but until it's proven otherwise, I will stick to my no offensive linemen in the first round policy.

Please say this is a troll

I'm not even joking when I say if they traded up to draft an offensive lineman, I'd sell my entire season ticket package this year. I'd keep the playoff tickets though

Honestly, I'll be pissed if we trade up AT ALL. We simply can't afford to keep trading up and drafting less than pro-bowl caliber players. We have to start conserving picks or trading FOR MORE picks some point. This having 4-5 draft picks every year shite is getting old

We don't always draft BPA in the first. Jordan, Ingram and Ellis were all needs at the time. Hell, we traded up Ingram and Ellis. Jenkins, PRob, Meachem and Bush were BPA.

I see us going OLB or OT.

I wouldnt be in favor of trading up, but the front office has been known to be aggressive in the draft and they may see the window to win is closing.. or they may want to prolong the window by keeping Brees upright.

Saints have done a good job developing interior olinemen, but not so much at the tackles. Bushrod was decent at best

Two first rounders to move up from 15 in a realitively weak top end draft is kind of crazy though. I don't think there is even a concensus #1 pick this year. Some say S. Floyd. Some say Jockel.

While Jordan was a need, I'd say he was also BPA. He was projected to go top 10-15.

Ingram and Ellis were definite needs and at the time I thought both were good picks. Oops.

I still have hope for Ingram, but in retrospect trading back up for him was a bad move.

but the front office has been known to be aggressive in the draft

and that hasn't worked out at all for us

Traded up for:

Woods - didn't make team
Pittman - didn't make team
Ellis - ......
Ingram - .......

Maybe we traded up to get Morstead in the fifth? He's decent

I can't recall others off the top of my head, but I don't remember us trading up really benefiting us under this regime

That's really all we need at tackle IMO. Hell, we won a Super Bowl with him playing LT.
